I'm done with Apmex. Do you like them?

Not that they have ever done anything wrong, but I have no compelling reason to ever order from them again. What do you think?

I ordered from them once, a year ago.

1. As far as I know, they won't let you use an echeck unless you use a paper check one time first. This is a huge pain to mail a check in. Other big bullion sites like JMBullion and Provident allow you to pay your first order with a credit card and then place future orders with an rechecking a card is on file.
2. Apmex's selection is very large, but their prices are outrageous. I have found that for current or recent year bullion, JMBullion and Provident offer better pricing. I have also found that for non current year bullion plus things like junk American or Canadian silver, local coin shops and shows are much, much cheaper.
3. The way they handled their Black Friday deals left a bad taste in my mouth. I found JMBullion's deals to be lacking in selection, but the discounts were decent. I loved Provident offering very steep discounts on new items every day. APMEX, I thought, offered pretty horrible discounts every hour they offered something.

What do you think? Do you like Apmex?

I've made good bullion and pre-33 gold purchases from Apmex. That said, you gotta shop around.

 

What's the deal with pre 33 gold coins? I have seen that mentioned before, why would that era be a better buy in gold?

 

I've bought plenty from APMEX over the years with no problems or complaints. I've also bought from others. I don't consider a check a problem: what is the rush to take delivery if all you are getting is bullion? With e-checks and free shipping I can buy from them when the price is good and have it in hand pretty quickly.

 

Sometimes the price for the pre-33 is pretty close to gold bullion (for MS62 and lower $20 Liberty), you get a slabbed coin that may have some numismatic upside.

 

1933 was the last year the US struck gold coins for circulation.

 

I've ordered from them twice. Service and fulfillment has been fine. I agree that their prices, at least for what I buy, ate not usually as competitive as other places.

 

Always check around for current pricing. I look at Apmex and others when purchasing. Apmex was the only place where I could find a nice chest of drawers for the 5 ounce ATB coins.

 

I order often from APMEX, never had an issue. And their prices often beat JMBULLIONs on common stuff. To each his own I suppose.

 

Why is it a huge pain to mail a check in?

 

We are a society of instant, spontaneous even, gratification. I fully understand the inconvenience of outdated and manual human intervention in today's day and age. I find it silly, but it still bugs me. EVEN IF APMEX does give a 2% discount or thereabouts vs. PayPal. Chalk it up to Zeitgeist. It's even worse than having to get up and walk across the room to change the TV channel by twisting a knob, something some folks in here may actually never have ever done.

Short time ago, I made an order and paid by E-check. I fouled up putting in my account number and just when I noticed through my APMEX account that the order hadn't shipped yet, I got an email from Customer service letting me know I had fouled up my account number, and they figured out the correct numbers and were shipping it out right away (before the check cleared). It was an order with a gift for my wife, and because they took the time to fix my bank info and ship out with no further delay, my gift and other metal all arrived on time as expected.
That was good service.! a few bucks more or less on a product doesn't matter to me if you get good service, and I do from APMEX

 

Ha. Yes. Likewise, and this was just YESTERDAY actually, I tried to save a few bucks by e-check and hit the wrong button and found I had to MAIL the check. Well, no way was I going to actually FIND a check and write on it, if I could find a PEN, and THEN, find a stamp AND an envelope. I was in a sweat just thinking about it. I opened the chat now window on their site and they fixed it for me in minutes.

 

Or hand cranking a car?

It's kind of a cross section between bullion collectors and numismatic collectors for common date common grade. Many common date common grades can be had for about spot and unlike some modern bullion numismatic collectors have interest in the pre 33s. A lot of people like the designs better as well and there is some potential for numismatic premiums to develop, they also tend to go down in price slower when metals fall than a pure bullion piece would

 

Some places use it as a way to sell classic U.S. gold at a premium working on the fear that your gold coins could be confiscated. The Feds would allow people to keep gold coins if they were considered antique collectibles, hence the pre-1933 indicator. The U.S. Gov't never "confiscated" gold, it nationalized it, paying everyone for their gold with Federal Reserve notes, then raised the price of gold from $20.67/oz. to $35.00/oz.

I think I was also just VERY disappointed by their Black Friday offerings this year. Last year not only did they offer great deals on government issued bullion, but I was also able to get a Tiger Shark 1/2 oz for free in my order. When all of that was combined, it made paying with a credit card basically come out to the same price as if I had paid by e-check.

Now... if I want to place another order and get the cash discount, I will have write a physical check, pay for a stamp and envelope, drop it in the mail, wait a few days for it to get to them, hope it doesn't get lost, wait a few more days for it to clear, and then wait for my package to arrive. What a hassle! This isn't a 1990s mail order catalog! I don't want to wait 3-4 weeks for my coins.

 

Why? Are you afraid they will change before they arrive? Are you wanting to sell them for a profit before the credit bill arrives? If you are collecting and plan on keeping them for any significant time then I really cannot see what difference it makes how long it takes.
