Silver Rounds Vs Silver Eagles for investment, which is best ?

I have been investing in Silver for a long time now, mostly in 10 OZ silver bars but
Since i like to stay diversified even in silver i also buy both silver rounds and random
Date silver eagles as i only look at them as 1 oz silver coins, but i was a little surprised
when my local dealer told me, that he pays more for silver eagles then for silver rounds
Dont really understand that logic as we are only looking at the silver content here not
Really the coin, remember these are random date eagles and would think the price
should be the same, your thoughts ?

american silver eagles are backed by the government and silver rounds are not.

 

You have a perception of ASE as a 1 oz round.
Most other people do not have that same perception.

I only buy ASEs as it's part of my portfolio.
Rounds are totally useless as a bank won't care about rounds if you try to leverage it. They have no problem with ASEs/AGEs.

Remember, *you* are looking at ASEs *only* for silver content. Other people are not. You can always sell the ASEs to your dealer for silver content only if you want, let them keep the extra premium,

As for "investment"; I consider PM as a storage of wealth and not really an investment. And investment is me researching and buying my stock and it appreciating 100% in a few months. in researching PMs it just swings up and down all the time and unless I move very large positions in a short period of time it's really not an investment that I want to deal with. Of course, that's *my* opinion of it. And everyone's opinion will vary.

 

I used to collect rounds just for the art. I never trusted all silver rounds to have the proper silver content. I trust silver eagles.

This particular part of your response (below) made me think of a time in the 60's when the Board of Directors of a well-known insurance company voted for a 100% stock split seven times in ten years because the stock rose in price to more than $100 per share, and the Board Of Directors feared that such a high price would hinder public investment in the company.

When was the last time that the US Mint cut the price of their SAE's in half to encourage investment? My point? If you want to invest, buy stock.............or real estate! If you want to save.............or hoard.....buy silver.

I buy both. it depends on the premium at the time. Eagles @ $5 over spot, or rounds at spot? I'll take the rounds. Eagles @ $2 over, I'll go with the Eagles. It just depends on the deal at the time. They both have a place.

Couldn't agree more with what you said.

 

Today, LCS was selling Eagles for $20.60, and rounds for $19.10. They seem to always have about this spread.

 

I prefer ASE's over rounds for many of the reasons already stated. However, rounds are not bad. Usually when spot is low I go for Eagles and when it gets higher I go for rounds. Shouldn't pay more than $3 over melt for ASE's and no more than $1 over melt for rounds.
