I see a bunch of post on our silver stacks but now i would like to see how everyone else stacks gold. Gold world coins, pre 33's, maybe bars or bullion coins. I love them all so let see what you all have.

This is one year in gold for me:)

I don't care much for gold coins because I feel that you are buying the metal more than the coin. That being said I think there are some awesome coins here. Wouldn't want to buy them, but I like looking at them for sure! Nice collection :)

I buy historic gold coins that have some numismatic value beyond their bullion content, so I'm not really a proper "stacker" (and my holdings are small anyway), but if I was going to be an "investor" or a "stacker", I'd enjoy World gold - old or new - anything I could get close to spot, with the more variety in design, geography, and history the better.

PS- I quite like your year's stack. Great variety there, and some nice individual coins! It's hard not to like gold, isn't it? :)

Here are mine from the last year, though technically the first and fifth are electrum.

The first five were bought for my "Eclectic Box" collection. All were raw when purchased except for the Japanese one.

Ancient Greece (Ionia, Phokaia): electrum hekte, Athena and quadripartite punch, ca. 478-387 BC
    [IMG]

(NGC VF; Strike 5/5, Surface 3/5)

Belgium (Brabant): gold florin (Carolus d’or) of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, ca. 1521-1545
    [IMG]
(PCGS Genuine; VF details, "mount removed")

Spain: gold half-escudo of Ferdinand VI, 1759, Madrid mint
    [IMG]
(PCGS XF40- population 1 - the only example certified by PCGS as of 11/04/2017)

Iran (Persia): gold toman of Fath Ali Shah, AH 1233 (1817), Yazd mint
    [IMG]
(En route to PCGS for grading as of 11/03/2017; this is a temporary picture)

    Japan (Meiji Era): gold/electrum Nibu-Kin (2 bu), ca. 1868-1869
    [IMG]
(PCGS AU55; population 76 with 27 higher as of 11/04/2017)

This sixth one I did get around melt price. Bought it for my "Creatively Damaged" collection.

"Scrappy but Sweet": love token on 1849-54 Type 1 gold dollar

You were not kidding about liking OLD gold. :greedy: I love the escudo and curious to hear how the toman grades. Please keep us posted on the grade when that it gets back, its amazing how well gold will hold over time.

You some very unique gold with some great population reports in only double digits. I need to try to find some older gold but i am under the impression that the numismatic premiums are too high.

The numismatic premiums are indeed too high if one is "stacking", but there is some happy middle ground in the Latin Monetary Union gold struck in European countries in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Some of that stuff often trades not too high above spot and can be a fun way to get some older stuff with handsome designs and a bit of history.

The Persian toman, my latest major purchase, looks Choice AU to MS but I wouldn't begin to want to guess a grade. In hand it showed some nice luster not seen in the pics. I look forward to the PCGS TrueView imaging as much as the grade.

I bought this one raw for essentially spot price.

Paid for the slabbing, of course.

Was quite pleased with the outcome.

World gold, mostly pre-1933 but not USA, is my preference. European, Turkish, Mexican, South American, South African, etc. All can be got for not much more than bullion. And it is all small enough that you can get a lot of it into a single 2x2 box and it takes up very little space in the safe deposit box. If I could afford more then I would buy a lot more of these countries. Alas, I have to stick with mostly silver and only buy an occasional gold coin.

Ohhhh there is some VERY nice looking gold here, can't wait to get into some myself! How expensive is gold? Like how much would something the size of a quarter be in gold?

    Thanks,
    Jacob

You are probably looking at $300-400 depending on what you get. More, or course, if it has numismatic value. A quarter and a sovereign are about the same size.

Gold is $1,268.40 per ounce right now.

It is difficult to answer your "size of a quarter" question with any precision - since it's all about the weight, not the diameter - but for one example, very generally speaking, the old pre-1933 US $10 gold coins ("Eagles") were roughly the size of a quarter, and those have $613.58 worth of gold in them, by today's price.

PS- I think @sakata's size comparison with a British sovereign is closer.

Could someone please suggest a proper storage container (box?) for these coins you have slabbed? I did buy some Guardhouse Tetra boxes for 2x2 holders and I find these great for their purposes, but I have not found anything yet for the slabs. Thanks.

I think you meant $5 half eagle. That is closer in size to a quarter. And that would only contain about half the gold.

That's why that first gold coin is such a milestone for every young collector. Or I should just say collector in general, because some of us can't afford gold even when we grow up.

Basic PCGS and NGC plastic 20-count slab boxes can be had for a few bucks. I might have one to spare - you pay shipping.

Of course you can go fancier, for a bit more money.

PS- I'm pretty sure Guardhouse makes some nice ones.
