I am thinking of a $5 Liberty Head Gold Eagle . And was wondering if anyone had a pic of actual size. Or is this a bad investment?

It's similar in size to a nickel. About the same diameter, slightly thinner.

I think half-eagles are the sweet spot as far as low premiums, although you can also do all right on Liberty Head eagles. If you're mainly interested in the gold value, and/or you like maximum glitter, you might consider modern $5 gold commems -- premiums there are even lower.

As far as "investment", see all the endless discussions on other threads. ;) There's no telling where the price of gold will go in the short term. In the long term, it's likely to hold its value better than paper money, but it won't return dividends or capital gains like an actual investment.

Thanks I do not own any gold coins and always wanted something to hold in Hand. I see Provident has them on sale and was thinking!

I have a wide variety of gold coins going back to early pre-33 $1 coins.
Just find a design that you like and get one. Best to stroll through a Red Book to see all that are available.

I think all of the old gold coins are cool. I sometimes wish I could collect nothing but. However, I still find myself fond of my wife and enjoy sleeping in my house.

If you're just wanting gold, you'd come out better with a 1/4 oz Eagle bullion coin. A pre-'33 gold $5 has .2419 oz, but a higher premium. The pre '33 coins are nicer (to me) but cost more. Why do the Indians sell for a higher price than the Libertys?

@-jeffB comparison is pretty spot on and here's some quick pics showing the nickel comparison.

If memory serves me (and it often doesn't), and speaking of the red book, I believe it shows actual sizes (?).

I'd probably go for the $5 gold! 90% is a lot more practical, too.
