Today I picked up a UNC close to BU 1985 Mexican Onza/Libertad for $0.90 over spot ($18.50 - silver was 17.60 ask). They know Libertads carry $4-5 over spot premiums. I guess b/c I'm a frequent buyer from them he likes to help me out. Also picked up some silver maple leafs for the same price as the 1 Onza. And a few BU '64 Kennedys for $7 each.

Dont kid yourself. He isn't giving you a deal just because you have a special bond. Its business. Silver inventories are massive and for all the big silver talk its not selling at $19. Premiums are non existent everywhere. Still that's a good deal you got if you like the coin. I think its a bumpy road ahead for gold and silver. Especially silver.

That is a good price! The only Libertad that I purchased from an LCS was a toned 1992 and it was $2 over spot (very fair for the color).

Onzas are just junk silver compared to Libertads

You are lucky to have such a store. The only two LCS close to me (both over two hours away) are run by surly guys who have no interest in you if you don't want to buy Morgans.

Onza's junk = LOL. Anything that has silver in it is NOT junk IMHO.

    Me too.

It's great to support local coin shops and come into contact with other people in the hobby. I'd hate living in an area where I couldn't have real interaction with other coin people and bullion investors.

I have many dealers around but prefer one in particular. The main reason is pre-64 silver US coins are often sold for right around spot. However, government bullion coins are pricier than buying online.

You've got to do what you can and buy where it's cheapest. Sometimes that's online, sometimes it's in person.
