My father in law passed away in 1994 and left a small part of his coin collection to my wife, i am sure most of the good stuff was already cherry picked by my wife,s sister who was the trustee, and i use that word very loosely!! Yea, they have "cherrypicked" it pretty well, if there were any good coins. The silver pieces are worth, what, 50 times face value, but they have no numismatic value from the groups pictured.
From what I'm seeing the silver is most of the value. The Statehood sets in the bags would probably sell for more than face value but I don't know how much over face. I would hope that your wife's sister was being fair. Ya never know. I would think the collection would have had some silver half dollars. I have been trustee on two estates in my life. With my mom's estate, I let my brother have anything he wanted. The only thing of value was the furniture. Here house had to be sold to pay for her long term care. On the second estate, I had to be referee between the daughter and son. It got nasty. The daughter told me to just burn all the money. She had no need for anything and didn't want her brother to have anything. The brother brought a lawyer into the nursing home and the police had to be called. The daughter was a federal agent and was going to beat the crap out of her brother and she could have done it. I did what I had promised their mom and was paid one dollar per day for my service as trustee. I took that money and gave it to St. Jude. I did more than the mom had ask of me to do. I brought the two kids together and when they started to argue I made them shut their mouths and start acting like brother and sister. They left that day as friends again. When the mom passed every cent of the estate was split 50-50. It was a rather large amount and everyone was happy. I hope to never have to be the trustee again.
My wife is from a big family 5 sisters and 1 brother, 5 out of the 6 are step. but her real sister ran my mother in laws business and was one of the trustees, there were actually 4 different wills the kast one was made with her real sister in the room and basically wrote the will for her manipulating everything so she would basically get everything and she did !!! she.s a real _ _ _ _ ! you fill in the blanks. to say i dislike this person would be a huge understatement.
That sucks. I have 3 brothers, and we worked together like a team to figure out our deceased parents estate distribution. Trust matters. We've always been fairly close, we are lucky. It was challenging and stressful, but we got it done, from real estate to dad's off the books silver and gold hoard. Me and my next oldest brother spent 5 hours dividing up dad's coinage hoard. He was a stacker and not a collector. When it got to the smalls, we ended up bagging them and weighing them on a digital scale. It was that crazy, the amount of poundage he had hoarded.
Unfortunately, my sister in laws are takers !! since we live in Nevada and everybody but one sister in law lives just a couple of miles from my mother in law they looted the house and all the premium and valuable items, leaving my wife with broken furniture and a bunch of garbage !, we did live there briefly before moving to fort wayne, Indiana, so we anticipated this eventuality and my wife was able to get 3 paintings some signed baseballs and some gold label baseball cards, the paintings were more sentimental then anything else i hope someday we can return the favor
