I was helping a neighbor with an inherited collection and this coin came up. No idea on this one but I told him there are people on Cointalk that would know about it.
That is an Athenian Owl Tetradrachm. They are very popular and expensive which of course means they are extensively counterfeited. I don't have the expertise to tell if it's real or not, but I'm sure others here can.
Knowing the weight down to tenths or hundredths of a gram, using a postal scale, would be helpful. Also, photos of the coin's edge.
It doesn't look right imho. Looks like a seam around the edge for one thing and the details seem off. Hope I'm wrong, but......
Likely a replica of a Greek tetradrachm with the Athenian owl, but to be sure if it's genuine or fake, start by weighing it. Genuine examples should weigh around 17-17.5 grams; if it weighs around 7-8 like a replica I have does, it is a modern copy.
I’m certainly not an expert but it looks like a reproduction to me. T he rate seems to be an edge on the rim of the coin. Definitely an Athenian Owl, and there doesn’t appear to have much wear.
It looks like a cast fake to me, unfortunately. It just doesn't look right. The details are soft and mushy, as with so many cast fakes. In fact, I even doubt it's silver. I am 99% convinced it's a "tourist souvenir" replica. I have a real one.
