Whats your favorite bullion coin and why ?

The debate continues, but for my buck i like Krugerrands how ever sometimes you get what is offered..LOL, but 9 out of 10 times you can get them at spot when my guy gets them, thats what i pay, AGE,S is what hes had as of late bought 4 !/4 onces the last two months, even the 1/4 OZ was an AGE...LOL, so paying only $30 over for those and $50
for the buffs both beats costco prices with out the drive.

But theres one bullion coin that i will pass on only because if it gets scratched or damaged in anyway the resale takes a big hit, i have actually seen that happened
recently.

Krugs. Got one and only one.

 

Krugers. But, I like ‘em all in the survey, and several others from around the world. Not for design, but that they are gold.

I have several Krugers in all denoms, and even have the SA 2 Rand which is a Sovereign standard.

Have several 1TOZ in various countries, and some 1.20 TOZ 50P from Mexico (cool size for a coin). However, I seem to gravitate to the 1/4 TOZ size.

Gold does not oxidize / tarnish. I have gold coins from over 2500 years ago. Just like new. Silver… pretty to some, but oxidizes. You never need to wear gloves for gold

I like anything mexican when it comes to GOLD because of the rarity premiums can be vary high though, got in to that game early and picked up these nice examples.

 

Yeah, buy bullion coin, put in capsule, throw in Tupperware container until the apocalypse. I suppose it would be the South Africa silver Krugerrand.

But I'd rather spend the money on silver rounds, or bars, which are bullion but can actually be fun to collect.

I hate bullon coins. They're like being a rooster and lookng at the same used up hen every day (especially ASE's). I'd have to do 30 minutes of stretching exercises to be more bored with ASE's.than I already am.

 

A Britannia and that is purely for one specific reason. In the UK if I bought this coin for $50 and it increased in value to $200 there would be no capital gains tax payable as it is regarded as "legal tender". If I paid the same money for a Silver Krugerrand or Canadian Maple after a meagre annual capital gain tax allowance I would be taxed at 24%. There are some other considerations and that is there is no VAT ( sales tax ) exemption on Silver so we pay 20% sales tax on them. Bullion Gold is sales tax exempt though.
We have high taxes in the UK . Earnings over $67,000 are taxed at 40% then of course we have 20% sales tax on most things, local taxes , employment taxes, fuel tax, road tax and of course death duties. I don't have enough time or energy this morning to explain all of our tax situation. Out of 260 working days I work 110 of them for the State. I also pay $9.42 for a gallon of diesel to drive my car safe in the knowledge that our batshit government does not drill for it in the North Sea because of global warming considerations so we pay billions of dollars buying our oil from the Norwegians who drill in the same waters.
I collect coins to keep my sanity.....

 

Actually Silver rounds and Krugerands are in most cases pretty close in cost
use to be a huge discrepency.

 

Anything US is what I prefer mainly for quick no bs liquidity!

 

I voted Krugerrand yet I don't own on in a full ounce.
Maybe it's because it's old-school gold.

 

Its the most popular and the most well known coin in the world, have several myself trying to do the birthday match game with them, but many years are just unattainable trust me i know in the mean time have had to turn to the AGE for 1987 an 2001 both in PR-70 i have managed to get a 1982 1989, 1991 for my 3 sons but the 89 was a pretty tough get.

 

Would travel overseas (all over) on bidness 4 to 8 times a year, for 2 to 8 week stints. Did this for 30+ years of my career. Even expatted for 3 years. I carry a few lower denom Krugers when I travel bidness overseas. It seems to be the World Gold Standard in a pinch. Also some lower denom China Pandas if I am traveling throughout Asia. Mexico carried Pesos (lotsa cool denoms..1, 2, 2-1/2, 5, 10, 20 Pesos, etc). Never carried full TOZ’s.

Silver would be like carrying a refrigerator, so I stack very little of that. Never carried silver, that was what local currencies were for, and of course a credit card. Gold is a much easier store of wealth in a much smaller space. Much more understood as a currency worldwide.

Thank goodness that I never needed to use them, but know biz associates who had. (Medical situations and one kidnapping).

Retired now, not biz travelling, but go overseas for pleasure occasionally. Don’t need to carry now.

 

The American Gold Eagle. I like the design of the old ones better than the new "eagle head" variety. You can buy them in four sizes. I would have voted for the Buffalo, but the tenth, quarter and half ounce pieces are almost impossible to find raw. I wish I had bought a set years ago, but the price always seemed to be too high.

The 2009 High Relief St. Gaudens piece is a coin because it's marked as "Twenty Dollars." Still it is traded like bullion. If it were bullion, it would be my favorite because it's a close copy of the pattern coin, which is the diameter of $10 gold, but twice as thick. The only survivors are in the Smithsonian.

 

Here,s one of my certified Krugerrands, these things are next to impossible in MS70
grade and this example has a population of only 53 !! and because of the rarity i would have to be lying on a street corner half dead before i would ever sale it, a true keeper

 

I voted AGE as it was my 1st purchase (1/10th ouncer) and I have a really nice proof I picked up at FUN 2020.

But if I had the $$$ to buy 10 "bullion" coins.....I would probably spend the bulk of the $$$ on quasi-bullion Saints and/or Liberty's.

As you guys know, I love the history and story behind those coins and if I can get one in MS or high-AU condition as opposed to a really beaten-up EF or lower coin, I would probably stock up in that part of the Bullion Department Store. JohnMilton has some great threads here on the stories behind pre-1933 gold and that's something you just don't get with a coin hot off the mint press this year or in recent years.

 

I would guess either the limited mintage and quality control prevented 70 grades....or all the coins pre-TPG were handled and touched since the Krugerrand was pretty much the only gold coin struck up to the 1980's I believe (someone correct me if I am wrong).

Agree on the 2009 UHR...the thing is, without any non-gold alloys and with the extra thickness, it looks "small" compared to my actual SG DEs.
