I just looked up carrier pigeons, and their history goes back 3000 years, so @Roman Collector also wins. I wonder if the doves on the coins of Sikyon have anything to do with homing pigeons? An interesting idea...
I don't use pigeons. I relly on my trusty dolphin-killing eagle for my messages. No enemy dolphins can stand in the way of her getting my messages out to the world. Before her I tried using messenger scorpions. However, after a few incidents with some pesky Roman quadrigas I promptly abandoned the idea and switched to eagles.
