    CTF Giveaway #4
    Contest status: OPENING SOON

    Because of @lordmarcovan's recent absence due to other commitments, (with permission from donors) I've decided to step in as temporary coordinator until his return. Below is @lordmarcovan's CTF giveaway layout. Thank you to our participating donors!

    Hang tight, the first round should begin shortly. Enjoy.

    Please take a moment to read the introduction below.

    There's a series of handy links at the bottom of this introductory post that you can use to see where we are in the contest, and hop to the latest ongoing round. You may join in at any time.

    Hello, everyone, and welcome to our fourth CoinTalk Friends (CTF) Giveaway!

    There will be four random drawings in this contest. Each week or so, there will be a different prize given away, and these prizes were donated by the generous people mentioned below.

    The drawings are subject to my schedule, so if I should ever happen to be absent, you may consider the current (open) round to be open for entries until I return and announce the drawing.

    To enter: go to the round summary below to view the most recent activity and see where we are in the contest.

    Want the lot that's up for grabs in the current (open) round?

    1) Just say you want that prize.

    2) Post something else coin-related or cheerful.
    If you win, we ask that you please post to this thread later, to thank your donor, and also so that we'll all know you got your prize.

    Alternately, you may enter on someone else's behalf if you prefer. Simply name the person you'd like to receive it.

    Totally free: the contest is free of charge, open to everyone. Most rounds should be available to international contestants, but check to be sure.

    Good luck!

    Numismatic regards,

    @Dafydd (Round 1 donor)
    @Kasia (Round 2 donor)
    @Randy Abercrombie (Round 3 donor)
    TheQuarterMaster (Round 4 donor)
    @Abramthegreat (temporary coordinator)

    Without moderator privileges, I suppose I can't edit the original post anymore, so just bear with me as we progress throughout the CTF #4 giveaways.

    Round 1 is now open:

    CTF Giveaway 4, Round 1

    Donor: @Dafydd
    Availability: international

    To enter:

    1) Just say you want this prize.

    2) Post something else coin-related or cheerful.

    If you win, we ask that you please post to this thread later, after receiving the prize, to thank your donor, and also so that we'll all know you got it.

    Alternately, you may enter on someone else's behalf if you prefer. Simply name the person you'd like to receive it.

    The random drawing:

    Should take place on or shortly after Saturday, May 10, 2025. If I should happen to be absent, you may assume the contest to be open for entries up until the time I return and announce the drawing.

    The prize:
    @Dafydd has generously offered a this Sestertius:

    [IMG]

    139 AD. Rome mint. Obv: FAVSTINA AVG ANTONINI AVG [PII P P] legend with draped bust right. Rev: [IVNONI] REGINAE legend with Juna standing front, head left, holding patera and sceptre; S-C in fields. RIC 1077a; BMC 1116; Sear 4675.25.82 grams total. N.VF. ("). From the estate of a Cambridge University academic.

    Of the prize, @Dafydd says:
    "I thought this would give someone a chance to post in Faustina Friday if they don't have a Faustina. She looks pretty stern to me which was one of the reasons I bought the coin as I thought the engraver was out to achieve resemblance not flattery. Considering she died when she was only 40 I would say the portrait really depicts a 40 year old woman well."

    Let's not forget to thank @Dafydd for the generous giveaway!

    That's a gorgeous Faustina! I will go for this, so here is my entry.

    Yes, the portrait can look stern. Or perhaps not stern, but simply not exactly showing warmth. Evidently she was married to her husband for about 25 or more years and they were a good match, as I read that Antonius Pius held her in high regard for memory for the remaining 20 years of his life. And the only daughter that would survive her (out of four children, 2 boys, 2 girls) who is known as Faustina the Younger (though they both have 'first names of Annie Galeria'), also was evidently held in high regard by her husband also.

    I couldn't find any definite reason for this Faustina's death, and it seems that historically, it is put down to probably natural causes, which could range from disease progression (perhaps TB or something) to a faster contagion like typhoid fever or something else equally bad. No way of knowing, but life was difficult for many women in older times, so while a number of women did make it into their 60s or more, many did not.

    In any case, I do think the structure of her portrait and neckline as done here is very nice and pleasant to look at.

    I don't have a Sestertius or any ancients(?) for that matter. It would be nice to have at least one.
    I do have hundreds of spinner tokens though.

    Wow @Sting 60 that certainly is a looker!! I used to buy some of these at Gunshows like Tulsa and Baltimore and when I tried to grade them I was always slapped across the chops! ( If you know what I mean) I reached the conclusion that if the coin did not go directly from the Mint to the TPG you had no chance whatever you thought which I guess save their profitable backsides. You have a truly exemplary coin and thank you for your generosity to @Jersey magic man

    Entry Post

    I'd like to enter this giveaway for my grandson. He has no ancients, probably isn't aware of ancient coinage, yet, and this is a beautiful example of an ancient.

    Thank you @Dafydd for your generosity.
    Thank you @Abramthegreat for stepping up to substitute as master of ceremonies for our beloved @lordmarcovan. Massive shoes for you to fill.
