This one is a case of now you see it, now you don't.
I bought this Didius denarius at a convention and then found it had been sold at auction the month before with this stain.
The second image is how I bought it.



Didius Julianus AR Denarius. Rome, AD 193. [IMP C]AES M DID [IVLIAN AVG], laureate head to right / CONCO[RD MILIT], Concordia standing facing, head to left, holding aquila and vexillum. RIC IV 1; BMCRE 2; RSC 2. 3.24g, 17mm.

 

I agree that there is a point where "toned" becomes too toned or as you say "tarnished". This one is close.



On the other hand, here's one that simply has a spot of tarnish. I really like the coin, but that spot in front of Liberty drives me nuts.

 

I sold this recently. I probably would have kept it if it looked better but who wants a black silver coin? I was glad I was able to sell it honestly.

 

This is the result of using an anti-tarnishing agent. Obviously it didn’t work.

 

I'd say the experiment was a success, in that it did a good job of determining whether or not that agent would work!

That’s terrible m. Sure looks like an ‘81-S with all that crud on it.
