1. I want to find some way to display my reverse proof and burnished silver eagles. Something where they just don’t sit in boxes. Maybe a display case or a coin capsule binder. 2. Keep plugging away on my Dansco 7070. 3. Read more on coin types that I don’t normally collect to branch out more. 4. Get my kids more interested in the hobby. 5. Obtain a Gettysburg Commemorative Half Dollar.
Well now I'm gotten a second coin for my early dates. I was successful on one lot in the Ellsworth collection I got an 1801 NC-2 large cent. It only grades Poor 1, but there are only 10 pieces known so I'm pleased to get it. (I was the underbidder on the 1800 NC-6 a SLIGHTLY more common piece.)
Well, we’re not even through January yet, and I already checked off two of the more expensive (gold) items off the list, at the FUN show! Done! No shipwreck pedigree on the gold cob, but that’s OK- it met my budget and has the contrasting look I wanted. I was beginning to think I wasn’t going to find one in my price range, but lo and behold, I did! Done! The new purchase upgrades my sold-and-lamented former XF40 coin by 18 grade points. It is back at NGC- not for regrading, but for Photovision imaging and reholdering. I’m bidding on one.
I have $0 dollars in my coin budget. So 1st goal is to not be too annoying with too much snark. 2nd goal is to poke @charley enough to get him riled up, to everyone's amusement. 3rd is to stay alive. This list is not in order of priority. This is my dog's approach to the new year...
Branch out/acquire more + different types of coins and paper currency Acquire my first Genuine Confederate note: done ✔ Acquire my first Morgan Silver Dollar: done ✔ Acquire my first CC Morgan Silver Dollar: done ✔ Acquire my first Peace Dollar Buy more silver coins (even if junk/scrap) Absorb as much information as I can here, participate more in the giveaways and hope for the best Buy more storage (slab holders/capsules/double sided books for Liberty/Buffalo Nickels) Get my dad to get back into coin collecting (I think it's working, he's going to be retiring soon. Between buying the MS-64RD 1958-D Lincoln Penny for him and talking about coins in general so much with him, he wants to find his stash which is somewhere upstairs.) It's definitely a physically easier hobby for him than striper fishing with me or the time of year where neither one of us wants to go anywhere My hopes might be super high on this: But MAYBE get my 1st gold coin. Whether its a world coin (I love the Escudos) or US Coin, just to get my first is an accomplishment.
✅ Done, at 2025 FUN. ✅ Done, at 2025 FUN. ✅ Done, as of today (Heritage win). And it’s still only January! But further expansion will come more slowly, as my war chest of funds to splurge is now greatly diminished.
OK, so this didn't actually arrive until January 10, so I'm counting it as a cusp goal achieved (won New Year's Eve, but Heritage didn't acknowledge it with an email/invoice until January 1 at 9:34pm). My set of the 21 known Barber dime transition varieties is now complete. NGC PF64. I didn't list this as a goal, but I wrote a BCCS article on discovering that the half dollar Obverse II and Reverse II was released earlier than 1901, but only for New Orleans in December 1900. They were shipped 4 1900-dated die pairs Dec 8 to accommodate extreme demand for half dollars after they had already been shipped 1901 dies. Gosh, that was published almost a year ago now. So there are four combinations of hub types for 1900-O. When I discover something, I like to pick up cheap examples. I already had Obv II / Rev II. Here is Obv I / Rev II, ANACS VG8. I might also get the common Obv I / Rev I, and the scarce Obv II / Rev I if I run into one. Nobody but me is ever going to care.
At this rate, you're going to have to start a new, much, MUCH longer list!!! Well, after you win the lottery! Congrats!
I would like to finish my date set of cents from 1793 to date. I have eight large cents to go. The one key date is the 1804. As it usually is, I saw a couple of 1804 coins before I was prepared to buy them. Now that I'm looking for it, the supply has dried up. The only pieces are available are either too high grade with fancy prices on them, or too low grade with fancy prices on them for what they are. Cents seem to be hot right now. I thought that I would not have too much trouble finding an MS-64, 1858 Large Letters Flying Eagle. It is an "add on" to the set, which would complete my Flying Eagle and Indian set. The asking and auction prices are running really high, and there are more than a few over graded pieces out there, with and without CAC stickers. The retail prices currently seem to be one grade ahead. For example, the price for a nice MS-63 is now retail MS-64 money.
Do yourself a favor and only buy one that has been certified by a legitimate certification service. I was joking at my presentation at FUN, but I did say that there might be more 1909-S-VDB cents now than there were in 1909. The counterfeit problem has been an issue with this coins for many years.
Here is a link to the PCGS site about 1909-S-VDB counterfeits. https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1110851/1909-s-vdb-authentic-or-fake#latest
I know that this coin has been counterfeited for a very long time. I would not consider buying one that wasn't graded and authenticated. Based on the number of graded ones I see on eBay alone (over 1000) I am kind of surprised at the prices of them.
