Here is the latest on my basic 19th century Type set of holed US coins.

Since the project of individually photographing all the coins is a Herculean task I’ve not gotten around to yet (one wonders if I ever will), here’s a quick overview of where the collection stands as of this post.

I figure I can use this thread for my checklist when I go to the FUN show in Orlando next weekend.

Nice! I enjoy the concept and like the corkboard method of display!

The fellow who owned my LCS had a 7070 album filled with holed coins. Definitely a different way to go for a collection.

Do you still have the hat with holed coins?

I think the 7070 format can really reflect someone's personality and to me your set is quite interesting. Some of those coins (esp those missing) would seem to be not that easy to get. BTW, are any of those "love tokens?" A holey type set of those would be a real showstopper. Well done and what fun!

Yes, though not all in gold, like it used to be.

Thanks. I believe there is a love token or two in the mix. I’d like to get more. To me, a love token can sometimes be better than a plain old holey. And I’ve had passionate flirtations with love tokens in the past.

On the other hand, I suppose for this set, which is kind of along 7070 lines, I should probably stick to pieces with most of their design elements intact. The strategy here really isn’t that different than a traditional 7070 set: get the nicest example possible- only with a hole. Preferably a small, tidy hole at the top. And obviously I’m not uptight about cleaned coins here. As long as it’s not too hideous, it’ll work.

Men with funny hats tend to gravitate towards one another at large coin shows. Who knew?

Nice collection! I too have a holed type set in a library of coins two book set. I have filled 58 of the 90 total holes in the books. I started it about 15 years ago. People want a lot more for holed coins now than they did then.

Yeah, that might be my fault. LOL

Have you found the 20th century types more difficult to find with holes than the 19th century types are?

For sure. I hadn't seen a holed Kennedy half until a collector friend of mine received one from his bank that he gave me.

To do a full Type set along Dansco 7070 lines, you’d almost have to “cheat” with some of the 20th century types, and drill your own. Which kind of violates the principle.

I won't do that. Like my set of Jefferson nickels found in Pocket change and rolls I will likely never find a 39d or a 50d. So be it, then those holes will never be filled. I won't pay more than five cents for those.
