What is this thing? It's not Roman, that's for sure!

    From a collection of US, world, and low-grade ancient coins from an estate sale.

    What is it and where and when was it minted?

    What's the proper orientation of the coin? Am I showing it upside down? Which is the obverse and which is the reverse?

    Is it similar to these Islamic coins from Syria, perhaps?

    And I think that the orientation of the first photo may be correct.

    I've seen this type before but all I can tell from it is with certainty that it is Islamic, due to the Arabic script on it. Most likely High Medieval as well.

    Also you will need to do something about the bronze disease on it so that it doesn't spread further and destroy the coin. Keep it isolated from other bronze coins and check the other bronze coins from the lot to see if they have BD as well.
