First glance I figured the surface was damaged by being filed or scraped against the concrete or similar.

However, upon closer inspection, it may not be such damage. What puzzles me is the initials at the 7 o’clock position is not removed or damaged, just no copper coat.

So the question for the professionals on this forum, is this a type of error or the ol’PMD?

    You mean plating ;)

Interesting. You can see the upraised rim in the area in question has been affected.

I'm not sure about this one because I have seen stranger things on copper plated zinc cents.

Because the rim is gone in the same area, I think this cent got a slight abrasion, from I know not where, that stripped off the copper coating. Well, that is my humble opinion anyway.

I’ve seen strange things on these zinc cents. Thus is one of them. I need to have the coin in hand to make this call.

I suspect a dryer coin caught at a slight angle. Jim

This is pre strike damage I’ve seen quite a few of these on shield cents. I like to say struck on a damaged Planchet.
    Here’s one of mine.
Also you’ll see grading companies label these as missing copper plating which it is missing but it’s not missing bc the copper didn’t get plated on.
It’s missing due to damage like thru a hopper after being plated. IMG_3750.jpeg IMG_3751.jpeg

NGC and PCGS are calling it defective plating. I also have a nice one from 2020.

That’s right I forgot the label so guessed haha.
But yea not defective copper plating.
And then the premiums when they’re sold I see bc it’s labeled as such.
    But isn’t what it is.
How’s ur 2020 look any pics.
