I work in the construction field. I save copper wire, sprinkler heads and pipes that comes from demolition. Much easier and good money!
Didn't notice how new you were. Welcome to CT. My comment was, you're asking a large group of collectors/investors of coins, tokens, paper, etc. on a forum for such if they collect pennies and nickels. Of course we do, a lot of us. I just find that humorous. Lol and can't help it.
I work construction also and I get a lot of scrap (copper, brass, aluminum and lead mostly) but I also save copper cents (check out my hoard here) and nickels.
I save any copper pennies I find, but I think nickels aren't worth it yet since they aren't worth more than face and because they're still being made with the same composition. The only reason I would save a nickel is if it has some numismatic value.
Any idea of the dates on those, or are they just mixed dates? Obviously there are some Steels in there.
I made myself a promise to only go through rolls to find coins for my collection, not to profit me. Coins and notes are government property (yes they are) so I believe it is wrong to go through hundreds of boxes of coins so you can profit yourself only a little bit. To answer your question, I save a bit of newly minted coins so I can hand them to younger collectors in the future. Just because a coin's metal content is considered invaluable, doesn't mean they aren't cool coins. In 2116, someone will find a 2016 coin that we look upon as trash today, and they will treat it as a treasure. We cannot rob the opportunity of the youth (and old) finding old coins and getting into collecting. That is something that some of us do on a daily basis. Let me just make an opinion that you don't have to agree on; Don't be selfish, whatever is given to you can be taken away, nothing lasts forever. I unfortunately have lived to see each of these, and just want to pass on the experience.
I think I may just end up putting my copper cents into a large bottle or something like that... I have a couple of jars of 1982s that I will sort through at some point.
