According to the internet the US Mint estimates there are 125 million coin collectors in the US. Another site suggests these are the most common reasons for coin collecting: 1. Investment 2. Rarity/beauty 3. Challenge of the hunt 4. Educational 5. Bullion value 6. Pass on to kids 7. Relaxation What is your main reason to collect?
Mostly 4 but I ask many questions and number 1 what I can sell it for when it comes time that ties into number 4 to me when figuring out the deal.
1) Relaxation - I don't have near enough in my life. 2) Educational - The coin collector in me is still the twelve year old kid that marvels at the hands and history that coin has witnessed. 3) Passing On To Kids - There is a portion of my collection earmarked for my kids & grandkids.
Not so much for investment......while my collection is worth something I'll never recoup my initial payout for most of what I collect. Relaxation and challange of the hunt.......that's where I most easily fit in, though I daresay that it's not terribly challanging buying moderns from the US Mint. Classic commems is another story. Therin lies the challange for me.......
9) Nostalgia - I started collecting when my grandmother introduced coin collecting to me. That was 57 years ago. That initial reason remains, although other reasons listed added to that beloved beginning.
