It's already April yet the RCM is still striking gold bullion coins with the QE2 portrait. What are the chances of 2023 gold coins being struck with King Charles for only a few days at the very end of the year? Is the opportunity to manufacture a rarity something all of the British Commonwealth mints will pass-up? Clearly, the RCM QE2 portrait coins will never be rare, nor the Charles portrait gold coins from the BRM. It would likely be very good for the gold bullion business overall if a rare regular issue bullion coin comes out with a mintage of only a few thousand, followed by lots of coverage in the mainstream press. What are the chances of that happening??
A chance to double dip on the collector base and milk more cash??? I think they will gladly take advantage. That being said, I think once Charles dies, the former protectorates will drop the likeness of the monarch. I bet Australia will be the first to buck the trend.
I think it depends entirely on who the next monarch is. If through some stroke of fate it is Harry, then perhaps even the British themselves will ditch the royal portrait on coinage. William on the other hand, stands a much better chance of upholding the tradition, more so than his father since William seems to have married better than Charles. That's the real rub even today, the unfortunate "dismissal" of Princess Diana by her not-so-princely husband did great harm to the Buckingham brand. 35 years later and not a soul has forgotten about it.
I wasn't alive at the princess's death but I do wonder exactly how things would have been different had she not perished so tragically.
Actually, it has been 27 years since they split, not 35. As tragic as the accident was, the divorce a few years earlier has had far more lasting repercussions for the monarchy imo. That's not to say the monarchy is beyond rehabilitation. More than even booting Merkle out of the royal fold, the rehabilitation of Prince Andrew's reputation would do the royal family a great deal of good. Unfortunately, no one, least of all the media, are willing to cut the guy any slack. The entire Jeffrey Epstein scandal has been blind to the gold-digger "victims" of his scheme, of which there were many. In the case of Prince Andrew, the 17 year-old woman in question was the age of consent in most every place in the world including the State of New York. Yet somehow he has been labeled a child molester for his affiliation with her, basically because the media decided it was immoral whether the law said so or not. In as far as numismatics are concerned, what are the chances that Price Andrew will ever again have his portrait featured on a coin?
It won't happen... So therefore... there is good reason for former protectorates / commonwealths to drop the royals entirely I can't wait for that day... the monarchy is all symbolic anyway, and a relic of a past filled with wrongs.
Very true!! But all of the nonsense I've seen since I kind of gained social consciousness in the past decade has left me with a less than favorable view of the Royals.
it almost seems like the monarchy is in charge, when do you actually hear about the prime minister ? I couldn't even tell you who that is...LOL
King George V, Kaiser Wilhelm II and Tsar Nicholas II were all first cousins. Just because a family quarrel led to 50 million deaths in the war is hardly reason to question the pomp and righteousness of the royal family. What's fairly interesting today, is how any announcement by Vladimir Putin includes video of him surrounded by tremendous Tsar-like opulence that's meant to legitimize his insane lust for conquest. It's kind of like Whack-A-Mole, just about the time one abomination is put down, another just like like it pops right back up.
Yeah, I've already looked at King Charles's gold sovereigns, I have no interest at all but here's the link if someone else is! Pricey with crazy high premiums, for the collectors with deep pockets I guess! https://collections.theeastindiacompany.com/
Yup, very high premiums. So high, I would think it would affect sales negatively in a significant way.
