Newp: Caria, Rhodes Didrachm - What a lovely nose

Discussion in 'Ancient Coins' started by iamtiberius, Jun 16, 2016.

  1. I've been purchasing 70-75% Greek over the last year; but noticed a lack of forward facing. After seeing the relief on this specific piece, I had to have it. It makes me wonder if many of the pieces we see in online auctions have similar profiles (specifically the nose,) but we're unable to see due to the lack of profile pictures.

    Caria Didrachm sans slab.png

    Caria, Rhodes. 229-205 BC. AR Didrachm. Ameinias, magistrate. Radiate head of Helios facing slightly right / Rose, POΔION above; bud to right; ship’s stern to left, AMEINI-AΣ flanking stem. Ashton 217; SNG Keckman 543; SNG Copenhagen 759

    19.7mm
    6.72g

    Note the die break at the beginning of AMEINI-AΣ

    Post your coins of Caria or coins with super relief.

    Wow! That's some incredible relief and more astonishing in its preservation. A big problem with front-facers, other than often poor artistry, is wear and flattening of the nose. This one is pristine!

    There is a worse answer than flattening. If you are fourree your nose can turn color. Larissa:

    She's got a nose that launched a thousand ships. Like Helen of Troy, your coin is quite charming

    Wow, quite the nose there! Be careful with that or you'll poke your eye out!

    Those aren't really front-facing, are they? ... they're still ummm 7/8th facing, maybe?

    => very cool OP-coin, iamtiberius

    I am a super huge fan of the Rhodes examples (I'm totally jealous of your cool OP-score)

    Amazing relief! I'd be afraid to look at it too closely for fear of getting my eye poked out.
