Hello All, I am interested in purchasing an unopened, government minted Roll of Silver 1oz coins? I have been saving (about $600) for a pre-33 gold coin but want to add some silver. I would prefer coins that have lettered or numbered edges but cannot find any. I understand that newer Maple Leaf's have a security measure but I prefer the numbered edges. I thought the Britannia's had #'d edges but I have looked at the websites of Apmex, Provident and JM and cannot find anything. Does anyone have an opinion on what to buy or where I can buy a roll?
You likely won't find any government issued silver with individually numbered edges due to minting costs, but there are some options for silver with lettered edges. The ATB 5OZ coins read, ".999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE" The Flowing Hair dollar and Draped Bust is another coin that contains edge lettering. Silver dollars minted during the years 1794-1804 read, "HUNDRED CENTS ON DOLLAR OR UNIT." on the coins edge. Your budget might be a challenge to find a coin with legible lettering though.
Thanks for the replies. I'll probably pick up a few Proof American Eagles if I can find them. I do like the America the Beautiful 5 oz coins but they are expensive and it is to late to start collecting those.
Not available yet. Probably not until this Summer. Then they'll be VERY easy to find at the USMint: http://catalog.usmint.gov/american-...er-proof-coin-16EA.html?cgid=product-schedule
I'm surprised the Canadian Mint doesn't edge-serialize some of their low-mintage coins -- especially given their high premiums. Other government mints? I haven't seen any with edge serial numbers. OTOH, some private mints edge-serialize. Some are pricey. But you can find beautiful Proofs for $30 - $50. Good investment? Maybe, maybe not. Doesn't matter... for under $50 I can afford to buy whatever strikes my fancy. Caution: Sometimes the same designs are used for high-volume bullion. Low price, but no serial numbers.
Great recommendation!!! These are perfect for my purposes. They satisfy my "collecting itch" while I save for a pre-33 gold coin. Not to mention they have billion value as well as numismatic value. Plus, they have the lettered edges which was exactly what I was looking for in the first place. I appreciate your help as well as your replies to my post. Thank You.
Serializing is an old gimmick used to drive up prices by creating an artifical/false rarity, often in collectible areas. There's a knife company that is big on this, yet in many cases, their unserialized knives - those costing less - were actually produced in smaller numbers. Do what makes you happy, but other than in, perhaps, very select cases, it's probably something hest avoided if premiums are involved.
"The new 2016 American Silver Eagles have edge lettering for the 30th Anniversary" when will they be released?
Release date for the 2016 Proof ASE is still "TBD": http://catalog.usmint.gov/product-schedule/?_ga=1.111896321.404332514.1446916421 But I'm guessing it'll be a month or so after the March 17th release of the gold Eagle.
