Recently added another to my small but growing hoard of Byzantine coins of Carthage, which I consider a sister collection to my Byzantine Italian coinage. Don't worry, I won't bore anyone this time around with histories of Justinian and his quest to achieve renovatio imperii . (in case anyone does happen to be interested in reading about the Vandalic War: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/re...-the-empire-strikes-back.263749/#post-2152349) This decanummium dates to the 13th year of Justinian's reign, or 539 AD ("ANNO XIII"= "Year 13"), only a few years after the recapture of Carthage from the Vandal Kingdom. Rather than post another 'average' Justinian of mine, I'll post this 'Vandalic' issue currently at auction (not mine); Gaiseric to Gunthamund, 440-490 BC, half siliqua:
I believe this Byzantine coin of Justinian was struck in Carthage. There also seem to be 2 portraits, one on each side of the coin. Condition is as sad as usual.
Cool stuff guys! @Mikey Zee I happen to have that type too In the name of Honorius, Vandal Kingdom AR siliqua Obv: D N HONORI-VS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right Rev: VRBS [ROMA], Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victory on globe and spear Mint: Carthage (struck 440-480 AD under King Gaiseric);Mintmark: RVPS (in ex) Ref: MEC 1, 1-3; BMC Vandals 6-9 How could you forget owning this nice little Carthage-mint gem? Unless it has offended you and you refuse to acknowledge its existence, in that case I would be more than happy to take your non-coin off your hands
Wow i miss this Thread Jeff, awesome coin and info, i don't think i have any Byzantine Car coins, i'll have to check!
The reverse of this Honorius coin has VRBS Roma as lettering, in addition to ROMA standing and holding Victoria. RIC IX 67 - Cohen 72. I don't know if it fits here.
son of a @#$%, I'm loosing my mind. my brain had that filed under "Alexandria". I even doubted my original attribution from last year and had to go look it up again. well, I'm glad last year me was correct along with this year you, and I hope that this year me remembers the coins I buy when he is next year me. see i'm not loosing my mind, that makes perfect sense right?
