I like this. Some silvering remains Maximianus Coin: Bronze Antoninianus IMP C M A MAXIMIANVS AVG - radiate and draped bust right CONCORDIA MILITVM - Jupiter presents Victory on a globe to Maximianus, Delta between Exergue: Mint: Heraclea (AD 292-295) Wt./Size/Axis: 4.21g / 22mm / - References: RIC 607, D
A superior example of the type! It's always fascinating to see how time treats similar coins differently. Yours is crisp and silvered with very little wear. Mine is overgrown with a thick patina that has made all the details mushy, even though it likely has no more circulation wear than yours.
Awesome!! => another winner, Pish (congrats) Hey, I actually have two examples of this dude ... Maximianus Antoninianus (Partly Silvered) 286-305 B.C. Diameter: 22mm Weight: 3.61 grams Obverse: Radiate portrait right Reverse: Victory being handed to Maximianus by Jupiter, CONCORDIA MILITVM EF, E in midfield, XXI in exergue ....... $24 (delivered) Maximianus AE Follis (Cyzicus mint) Date: 305 AD Diameter: 28.5 mm Weight: 8.44 grams Obverse: D N MAXIMIANO BEATISSIMO SEN AVG - Bust of Maximianus, holding mappa and branch Reverse: PROVIDENTIA DEORVM QVIES AVGG - Providentia and Quies facing each other. * between, S / F in fields, KD in exergue E in midfield, XXI in exergue
You folks influenced me to buy one of these nice coins about a year ago, from the ANA show in Chicago: Maximianus CE 286-305 AE follis, 9.9 gm, 27 mm Obv: IMP C M A MAXIMIANVS PF AVG, laureate head right Rev: GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, Genius standing left holding cornucopia and pouring from a patera; XXI in left field, E in right field, ALE in exergue Mint: Alexandria Ref: RIC VI 30b
that's a SWEET example of the type pish, silvered and sharp as can be. several nice ones here..i'll refrain from posting mine..not the best.
The big point here is JA's 'mushy' coin is not at all the same as the OP or Steve's antoniniani but is a post reform radiate which did not have the 4.77% silver content or silver wash when issued. It has no XXI and usually patinates differently. Pish's OP coin is as nicely surfaced as I recall seeing on these. My contribution to the Maximianus antoninianus show is a coin issued by Carausius in Britain (London mintmark MLXXI) as part of his failed attempt to win favor with Maximianus and Diocletian. It's condition is not great but they are not easy to find. My post reform is from Cyzicus and has sand over green patina. It is like JA's except it is workshop delta (4) while is is E (5). If you find one of these with silver, it was added by a seller hoping to make them more salable. The alloy on these wears a bit differently and patinates better (at least the ones I have seen seem to). Post reform coins of the larget size were silvered washed and silver bearing so it will be harder to find a large follis like Mikey and TIF showed with surfaces like the radiates of JA or the one below.
In going through some old mixed lot bronzes, taking photographs, I found another Maximianus. The obverse is fairly nice; very tidy legend, portrait, and centering . The reverse... meh. I hope I have the correct attribution. Maximianus CE 286-305 Antioch AE antoninianus, 22 mm, 3.9 gm Obv: IMP C M A MAXIMIANVS P F AVG, radiate cuirassed bust right Rev: CONCORDIA MILITVM, Jupiter presents Victory on a globe to Maximianus, H between, XXI in exergue Ref: RIC VI 621 H
Woah-woah-woah...here! WAIT a minute... 1) @Pishpash: VERY very nice Maximianus! You all are starting to turn me to RE's... 2) But: HOW can you let @stevex6 POST right now??? He has LEFT, has given @Bing the Keys to the Kingdom... But Steve can post? He supposed to be GONE for 2 weeks, enjoying time with his Father... 3) LOL, I am COMPLETELY at a loss over this. So confused... Steve: Hope the flights were good! Hope you are having a great time in VBC!!! Get back to your family dude!!!
Doug is right of course. The coin I posted is a post-reform radiate as opposed to an antoninianus. Here's an ant then - this is a good example of a billon coin with remnants of silvering...
Hi all, I just came across this Maximianus with Concordia on the reverse and confused about the mintmark. It seems to be ANT. Most coins I search have the XXI or ALE mintmark. ANT could be antioch but I can't find any similar ones online. Any clues what this is?
