How many ounces will someone really need if read language rules? Predicting a price or a value is maybe a moot point if wealth is measured in ounces, but realistically some kind of other currency might replace the dollar for day to day transactions. Just curious on everyone's opinion when do you stop stacking and buy other things that could be helpful in rough times.
What makes you think that someone would even want your metal in such a scenario, so the answer may very well be zero. It is a big assumption that Silver will retain value if society as we know it breaks down. I mean what exactly do you expect people to do with a useless shiny metal. Probably better off stockpiling nails, now there will be a need for them.
I would agree. To me, pm is valuable only if the edited in MY country, but not ALL countries. Pm enthusiasts like to point out the value of gold in wartime, well that is only valid because there was a place to escape TO. If the whole world turn to crud, pm will be as valuable as a Porshe or a fancy iphone. There are two reasons I invest in pm. One, as a counterbalance to other investments. Many times pm is a contra asset, helping balance out overall portfolio returns. Second, I like shiny, pretty metal. I like Scrooge McDuck'ing it and running my hands through piles and piles of silver coins. No harm done. To directly answer your question, if you have debts or haven't invested in yourself with education that comes first. Once you have some "extra" money laying around, then I would say 5-15% of your net worth is a range that would be acceptable in my eyes for you to have in pm. It really makes no sense buying pm and paying 18% interest on a credit card, right? Cut expenses, improve income, then you can afford to buy pm.
I never said that holding pm was the end all, just curious what others rationalize as their own amount or number. Honestly nails won't do any good if things get that bad and I'm not expecting doom... but honestly if silver let's say goes to a mean level if X per ounce I think most people that stack will feel relatively well off. I don't care about debt if the country go's to heck... they will have a hard time trying to collect from the tens of millions of broke people waiting in soup lines.
if edited and it came to it , the things you need are not silv er and gold , guns ammo food shelter and water purification system
Here's another take -- I have an apartment FULL of junk and collectibles and antiques, etc. I have 30-40 CraigsList ads running all the time (but sales have slowed considerably this past year). All the money that comes from selling junque goes into 90%, plus a supplement from my income. We had this same discussion about two years ago. Ron Paul says a day's coming when the dollar will crash, and it will take a long time to recover, and I believe him. The wealthy will always buy/barter PMs, in anticipation of a recovery. Everyone has to believe in, or hope for, a recovery, otherwise life's not worth living, especially if you're 70 and the meds run out, unavailable at ANY price. If you are REALLY a pessimist, you stack ammo, not PMs. I'm not that negative. Go back 2,000 years, gold and silver have ALWAYS been welcomed in preference to fiat money. The Crusades, the endless European wars of the Middle Ages, the wars for ocean supremacy, it was all about the money, money, money. About religion? Resources? No. Money. PMs = a good global currency, no apology/explanations needed.
how much is enough? How much can you carry? If -edited- you may have to get out of town real quick......
If we could take Greece as a lesson, than Gold would be a good investment. If they had bought gold they might be able to sell to a foreign country that has not experinced syndrome.
If it hits the fan we will convert back to tangible commodities relavent to life itself. Food, medicine, clothing, shelter, security and a good stiff alcoholic drink to help us forget what just happened. (There will always be people who can provide the latter in Kentucky, West Virginia and Tennessee). Green18 thanks you guys for not giving up on your trade. :>)
Well this is awkward but I agree with @mikem2000 about nails. I think in a real SHTF environment they'll be a lot of tree house building going on. Other things that may be in demand are bicycle parts especially chains. And special tools for bicycle repair such flat wrenches and chain breakers. Also, bottles of two cycle oil for mopeds and home made motor bikes. Maybe. I think a fairly quiet bicyle would be preferred around Bartertown than a noisey two stroker. But who knows.
