I just purchase this from eBay. I saw someone post almost same kind error sold for 550 on eBay. I think that raw 1964 half dollar. This one is special mint set . So it are more rare then 1964 one I think, what you folks think?
Nice.. How do you know that is Struck Thru Thick String/Rope? What is the evidence that it was a String?
Look like a big rope cross head don't you think? I paid 500 for it I think I have good deal on it, here's what the seller say: Up for your consideration is an incredible Kennedy half dollar error. It is a special mint set 1965 40% silver struck through a loop of string/rope on the portrait of Kennedy himself. It makes the loop from the edge down through the hair and back up to the edge. It is graded MS67 by NGC and is a stunning coin with beautiful toning on both sides. I've never seen another one like this on a special mint set coin.
Ok but that's not the evidence I was looking for. On a struck through rope you can see the fibers also struck through. I have a similar coin that I posted on my own thread - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/19...-string-with-fiber-marks.260924/#post-2104385
$500.00 is way too much even for an SMS. I paid $80.00 for my coin. But if you like yours then good for you!
Can you show us where a 1964 with a strike through sold for $550, raw or slabbed? Not just word of mouth, but proof. I find it difficult to swallow.
As an error variety collector good luck on trying to recoup the amount paid. Like anything you have to sell it, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay. Finding a buyer for the op coin at that price point would take quite awhile and perhaps never.
Apples to Oranges….. Your 1953-D is a “Problem Coin” (AU Details – Obverse Wheel Mark), whereas the OP’s coin is graded problem free in MS67. It stands to reason that the OP’s coin would be worth multiples of your “Problem Coin”. You can not tell from the picture, but realizing that both PCGS and NGC will with higher grade 1965 – 1967 coins lean towards SMS over MS when in doubt (mostly for liability issues and the cost to their guarantee) and noticing the lack of details in the eagle’s feathers below the shield makes me question if this coin is a “business strike” or from a “Special Mint Set”. If it turns out to being a “business strike” coin graded MS67 then the $500 paid would be just a fraction of its value – even without the error on the coin. When and if the OP decides to sell, I doubt that he will have a problem finding a buyer for a minimum of 90% of his buy price (he could very well actually sell for more than his buy price).
Makes sense Tim. I hate wheel marks! .. I should say that I was the highest bidder on my coin. Could of been worth a little bit more even with Details. Just got lucky bidding on my "problem coin"..it is a beauty though!
Please don't take me wrong, for $80 you got a heck of a coin regardless of the "wheel marks". Nice pick - up!
I don't know about the resale market of the coin in question. I think it is a very cool strike thru and quite uncommon as well. I like the coin.
Maybe a little sugar water might help you swallow it down...... QUOTE for the day: Deleted ... On second thought, it is unfair.
Well, I found it hard to believe but here's the eBay auction from the other thread: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-KENNED...TpD6i1eCId%2FchaMiuXY%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
