Hi, I know i am one more person bothering you with a genuine/fake 1917 sovereign. So, I have a George V sovereign with no mint marks and I know that these are rare.Dimensions, weight, and carats are ok. I wonder if anyone might know if he/she could find something more from the downloaded pictures following Best regards, Lefti, Athens, Greece https://eikona.info/upload/big/2015/03/31/551a84d989854.jpg https://eikona.info/upload/big/2015/03/31/551a86903ba92.jpg https://eikona.info/upload/big/2015/03/31/551a86ac7fd95.jpg https://eikona.info/upload/big/2015/03/31/551a86cb87227.jpg https://eikona.info/upload/big/2015/03/31/551a86ee9d69d.jpg https://eikona.info/upload/big/2015/03/31/551a8712a71d0.jpg
It might be the angle of the photograph but on a genuine example the cape and the horses tail are nearer to the edge.
I wonder why they continued to strike these when sovereigns were withdrawn from British circulation and replaced by £1 and 10/- Treasury notes in late 1914. By 1917 the Treasury note was well established
Two copies from a photographer are uploaded. https://eikona.info/upload/big/2015/04/04/551fc1a84da84.jpg https://eikona.info/upload/big/2015/04/04/551fc232c5d31.jpg Thanks for your comments in advance
Thanks, I just checked them. Your coin looks real, I still think it may be cleaned though I'm not good with gold in general. I'm guessing it is worth around $450-$500. 1917 is a scarce date.
The latest photographs show no signs of it being fake. The exact weight is crucial. If real the current British catalog prices are ; Fine £1500.00 VF £3000.00 EF £8000.00
Pretty sure it is a Lebanese counterfeit. Still probably gold, but only its weight in gold and not a numismatic premium: http://goldsovereignexpert.com/info/fake-gold-sovereigns-spotting-counterfeits/
Hi, thanks for your response. Can you please show me the parts where you believe that the coin is fake ? (ex. horse tail, "pimply" surface ...). Thanks again,
The two recent pics look fake to me. The details on obverse and reverse look mushy, not too sharp. You really have to compare genuine coins to yours to see the difference
