That I posted in the fake Trade Dollar thread, and how I contacted the seller about returning it, and they asked me not to use the return item route on ebay since they were a "family business" and couldn't take the hit to their ratings. As it seemed to be an honest mistake on their part, I returned the coin with info as to how it was underweight and had features of a cast fake. My payment and return shipping/ins were promptly refunded. So, I go out to their eBay store yesterday, and what do I find? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1875-S-Trad...21?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item27f69e393d Relisted, in the same 2x2! Steve Caruso, you were right!. Just pin 2 big floppy ears and a long tail on me and call me an a**. I would not trust any raw coins from this outfit. Here is my own photo of the coin as I received it.
OK, CoinTalkers, talk me down. Talk me down from buying this thing, getting it, and reporting it to eBay as a counterfeit, presumably (based on past experience) meaning that I get my money back AND get to keep it for the Black Folder.
I'm no expert on Trade Dollars, but it looks like a great fake, if it is. How much under weight was it? Since it's in the same holder, did you weigh it in the holder?
It was a full gram underweight after subtracting the weight of the 2x2. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/how-do-you-spot-fake-trade-dollars-anyway.63695/page-5 Link to other thread with more detailed images.
I don't know if I'd trust a gram difference for a worn coin in a 2x2. I don't know (again), I would imagine 2x2's vary slightly between manufaturers. You posted a pretty good pic, can anyone point out any clear indictors that it's fake?
With the new law that went into effect, it is now a federal crime to sell counterfeit coins that are not marked "COPY". I'm just wondering what would happen if you notified eBay (don't bother buying it) that it was a fake and they didn't do anything about it. Could they be charged as well? Chris
Didn't take them long to put it up for sale again. Given the fact that they may be legit they possibly don't want to take their lumps on this one? They can't be legit. A reputable dealer would take the loss and move on. These guys are bad news.
@ksparrow , do you still have the link to the old auction? I tried the Google cache trick (both ways) and can't find it... or the old auction #...
Looks like someone beat me to it. Given that the value of a legitimate low-AU 1875-S is considerably lower than the asking price, I'm guessing someone else is in on the joke.
What a low life . At least you took the high road as always Doc . May all their fakes develop verdigris . And such a bad fake when you see it up close , casting bubbles everywhere .
Sadly this is becoming more and more common. :-( It's easy money... and the reason why the Collectable Coin Protection Act was passed. Time to report them. I'll go over their entire list of things and see which ones I can directly confirm.
Yep! It would be nice if the feds started paying a bounty for reporting these crooks. You could make a fortune on SleazeBay, alone. Chris
Ugh, all of their photos are just low-enough resolution to hide problems and make checking their authenticity difficult, too.
Exactly what I thought , it's how Doc got fooled , his looked like a Type I /II micro S variety in the pic one of the rarest '75-S Trade dollars . But with decent pics that he took , showed it was a cast fake . Sad indeed .
Here's a link to the original auction:http://www.ebay.com/itm/171615505786?_trksid=p2060778.m2748.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
tiny metal bubbles around IGWT. holes in 900 and DOLLAR and field in between, mushy dentils. more bubbles from casting process: A lightly worn trade dollar should not be a full gram light. no way. Doesn't matter anyway due to the myriad fake diagnostics.
A good fake until you look close. Why I won't buy any raw trade dollar I cant examine in hand. Sight unseen I'll only buy slabbed in hand I've bought a lot of em. I'm glad you got your money back. Hope someone shuts those slimeballs down
Just wondering here , shouldn't the diameter of a cast fake be slightly smaller due to contraction of the metal when cooling ? Has anyone ever measured the dia. of a cast Trade dollar ?
