Hi all So my local coin shop has an oz for oz policy when it comes to trades. I was thinking of trading my 10 oz Scottsdale for (10) 1 oz ASE. Do you think that is worth it? or not really worth the trouble? Any insight or opinions would be great.
"Worth it" as in how? As far I am concerned you would already be coming out on top, so what more could you expect?
You are very fortunate if your shop would do that. Silver Eagles are more liquid, easily recognized & always carry a premium. I think it's a great deal!
Are you sure about that policy? So you could trade a 100 oz bar for 100 silver eagles? You'd come out about $150-$200 on a trade like that.
The trade would make more sense if the business owner would trade the ASE at current retail and value your generic bar at spot or slightly below spot.
As soon as your local dealer realizes he is losing money with that policy he will stop taking generic bars/rounds in equal trade for silver eagles.
While I agree completely that the Eagles are worth more, you would be surprised, in the Columbus market, some buyers will pay Eagle premiums for rounds. They "collect" rounds. Down the road, the joke will be on them...
I could be wrong, but cannot help but to wonder is there is a misunderstanding here. It's hard to imagine that this gentleman, who presumably does this for a living, would set himself up for such a fall. If there really as an "toz for toz" trade policy, it's likely that he's the one looking to take ASEs off of customer's hands while handing them the generic rounds/bars and not the other way around.
Those poured bars are a bit of a fad right now. So it may be that the shop owner has a buyer for that bar at a premium that is more than the ASEs. I would make that trade though, eagles have a much larger following and are more recognizable...
sorry if I didn't make it clear earlier. the shop wont allow generic rounds for silver eagles. They do bullion coins for bullion coins. But when I asked them about my Scottsdale silver bar they were happy to include that.
If the Scottsdale bar isn't anything special, the trade is more than worth it. Some of the bars are worth a premium so be sure and do your homework. Like the hand poured bars by Scottsdale.
Scottsdale is selling that bar for 235ish right now, so I'd make the trade. I may be off by a few $$$, but it's still a trade I'd make
