Ancient coins don't lend themselves as well to the blog format or so I decided when I stopped the weekly updates of my website ten years ago. That was before I was even aware that there was a thing called 'blog'; I just thought I was posting a new page each Friday. Now I prefer longer updates without a schedule. The two above are mostly about the fight against those who would make collecting ancient coins illegal. That is a timely matter that does fit the blog format.

Question: Are the good numismatic sites either dealers or blogs? Are there pages about modern coins that might assist the new collector of a modern coin (not new issues but not ancient either)? Is that a different question than the one asked here?

http://www.heritagecoingallery.com is a site for silver and gold coin collectors. It is updated twice a week and has over 200 relevant informational articles for coin collectors. It touches on many subjects. The category widget on the upper right side of the page lists the categories of topics. The lighter side of coin collecting is some coin humor that's inspired.

The work of a private research team on Indian coinage. The co-chairmen has a major publishing contract and the first book of a long series is available. The Blog consists of several sections. The actual Blog section (see tabs on home page) is currently running articles sourced from world experts and written for this particular blog. Currently Copper (bronze) disease is discussed and also the correct storage for coins. Book two of the series is 80% complete. Book 1 on the Silver Coins of Shah Alam I has been released and is 298 pages most in full colour showing and discussing the coin legends in an innovative way. The Blog will be expanded over the next few months and include various feeds and updates.

A lot of so-called, blogs are written with a commercial angle to them so while I agree with some of those listed above, the ones like MintNewsBlog and CoinUpdate or Coin Week, are also e-newsletters with many subscription based readers. Their reports or updates tend to direct people to follow whatever trend they know people are reading/curious about buying something anyway and capitalize on directing readers to sales on eBay, the US Mint's online catalog or other ways to buy in major auctions. Heritage, Stacks and others write some decent things too, but they want you to explore and buy from them so I don't consider those blogs but incentives for people to shop. The Numismatic publishers also do this with Numismaster, CoinWorld and others offering tidbits of stories hoping to get you clicking on an advertisers link or paying for a subscription.

For blogs, I prefer an individual's touch, their personal insight, rather than daily/weekly news summaries or round ups, or superficial publication articles. Of course responding to what's going on is fine. I just prefer those blogs that have an experienced professionals biased insights and willingness to share stories about issues and coins that others aren't talking about because it doesn't equate to traffic getting hits and earning ad revenue.


Doug Winters' has one of the best educational blogs on his site that doesn't hit you over the head to shop on his site, though I'm sure the folks running the show would hope you'll buy or sell something to them:

The Coin Show - CoinTalk members original "radio" (pod cast) is/was a nice blog.

There are remarkably few that come to mind that aren't run by auction houses or dealers of some sort. Perhaps because forum boards are quite prevalent and where many go to trade news and discuss.

I'm looking forward to reading the list as it develops.

 

This thread is great - there are so many that are new to me!

I'd mention my own blog but I can't even begin to aspire to 'best'. I do update regularly and do try to be interesting, but it is hard work and I envy those who do it well.
