I've been busy all day and just now getting a chance to get on the net. Nice pickup little buddy. It just had to be another animal coin, eh?

BTW, congratulations to you Canadians on beating the US hockey team and good luck tomorrow. If we can't have the gold then I can't think of anyone better than Canada.

While not the typical coin of the century, I agree that the cartwheels are cool coins. I have two far less than high grade ones. The metal is soft and they beat each other up even if just falling a short distance as in filling a bag. We poor folks need to decide if we want a worn coin or one with 'problems'.

This is an example of photos being deceptive unless you know the trick. One of my coins is a 2d while the other is only 1d. If you count the leaves on the branch on the reverse you'll find one extra leaf at 10 o'clock on the 2d. I'd like to know why they thought it was necessary to make this little difference but still make it so very slight.
The seller that sold my 2d had at least a hundred of them and all were faulty. Some had edge nicks (I have several coins that weigh more than the metal missing from the largest nick). Many were engraved like love tokens. Others were just defaced. None would be suitable for most collections but I wish how I had bought a sampling of them just as curiosities.

Nice coins Doug (thanks for posting them) ...

=> oh, and please feel free to post any coins that you think I "should have bought instead" ...

Yes, I contemplated snagging one of those cartwheels (I agree that they are quite attractive), but I'd choose my "bear on the wall" design over those babies anyday!!

=> oh, but who says that I can't and won't have "both" before everything is said and done, right? (well, I guess my wife might have something to say about that? *sigh*)

Dougs coins, although far from perfect are actually very nice examples. Far better than the usual stamp. I usually look to the union jack on the shield to see whether I want a 'cartwheel', if the ship is also clearly visible then I will buy at the right price.

If I were wealthy Canadian and wanted a 'foreign' coin of that century, I'd get a US coin of the Revolutionary period like a Fugio cent, Continental dollar or even just an appropriately dated standard US silver dollar/large cent. This list has many US residents who might not consider them 'World' coins but you can. For your coin of the next century, will we be seeing an 1858 Canadian cent or will you go foreign and show a Flying Eagle from South of the Border? I can hardly wait.

Those cartwheels really are interesting! Not being a world modern collector I hadn't seen them until this thread by LostDutchman and boy, I sure would like to have one now!

I agree with Doug's Fugio recommendation and would like to have one. Last year I bought this one for a friend whom I thought would appreciate the history and the "Mind Your Business" legend. Not the greatest example but decent for the price. Need to get my own now :)

Ahahaha Doug => yah, I'm not sure if that's sarcasm, or whether that's honest interest, but either way I'm glad that you're still noticing my "One From Every Century" endeavour!!

    ;)

Oh, but once we hit the 1800's => yah, you're definitiely gonna see my good ol' Canadian coin-collection bringin' it on home!! (my upcoming coin-purchases will definitely be aimed at ancients once again!! ... my budget has been tightened recently ... so enough playin' around => it'll be back to ancient business!!)

YOC => thanks for the great advice

=> I set the alarm for 5am => woke-up, made the wife coffee & breakfast in bed, and then we watched the Canadian hockey-dudes win themselves (Canada) back-to-back Gold-medals!! ... it was a fantastic morning!!

    http://sports.nationalpost.com/2014/02/23/canada-vs-sweden-sochi-olympics-mens-hockey-gold-medal-game-live/

NOTE: eh-heh-heh ... a definite added-bonus to the morning was the fact that I almost jumped into the shower to get ready for work, but then I realized that I'd set the alarm for the Gold Medal Game (yup, that's gotta be one of life's best moments, eh? => the good ol' realization that it's not Monday, it's Golden Sunday!!)

... anyway ... so far it's been a great day and it's only noon ...

    Cheers brothers

well for the 1800's how about a superb silver crown of Victoria? BIG chunk of silver with a fantastic george and dragon reverse....several nice busts to choose from, with the young 'bun' type the most desirable IMO, but the veiled later ones are elegant too.......in the hand they are very pleasing, right up your alley!

We all will differ on what we consider best for any period. I like coins that served commerce. When I was a kid, the common coin we saw was the half dollar. A whole dollar was a lot of money so there was a need for the half. Today, in the US, there are almost no halves in circulation. Dimes and quarters bear most of the coin load and a whole dollar is not so much any more.

In the 1800's was the, agreeably superb, silver crowd a major player in the economy or was it the florin or shilling? US silver coins of the 19th century had the unusual situation of all being the same basic type from 5 cents to a dollar: bust, seated, Barber. This stopped at the start of the 20th when each took a different pose of Liberty: Mercury, standing, walking before they went with the worst of all series of dead Presidents. When we select the coins to represent the century, should we go for the commercial workhorses, the high art leaders or something else? The first 22 centuries in the survey say mostly common workhorse coins because so few of us have the rare items (gold medallions come to mind). The copper cartwheels were fine examples of failed currencies but I thought them neat enough to suggest. Today only the countries that realized that inflation made it a good idea to issue one and two (Euro, Pound) coins rather than bills kept coins as spending money. In the US, they are 'change' made necessary only because of the continuing silliness that a price should be $1.98 rather than $2 and contrived sales tax collection systems. I will be interested in seeing what people post for the centuries in which they lived.
