Which 1 oz. silver bullion series will appreciate the most?

Discussion in 'Bullion Investing' started by TopcatCoin, Jan 13, 2014.

  1. Other than ASEs, which one ounce silver bullion series do you like the most for future appreciation above spot price of silver and why? Choices include: Libertads, Pandas, Philharmonics, Kookaburras, Maple Leafs, Britannias, Takus, etc., etc. Yes, I do know they are all silver bullion but many carry a premium well above spot especially for back dates. Which series do you think has the potential to take off in value regardless of silver spot? Thanks, TC

Pre-2010 Pandas will always carry a hefty premium above spot due to relatively low amounts minted. I like Libertads, and have about 20, but Mexican coins don't generally get the credit they deserve. I can't speak about others since I mainly have ASEs, Libertads and Pandas. They are all good.

SBSS & the ZomBucks series. I know it may not be in your route, but after the designs are discontinued they do go up in price. Also they are very cool!

I like Pandas. I don't buy for profit, just for design, but I always notice the Panda mintages are very low compared to say ASE's and Maple Leafs. Plus the designs are far superior in my opinion.

Pandas... if you can find them reasonable...libertads seem to be good buys and low mintages

I would agree with the pandas for a few reasons. One, they are cute. Two, the design changes every year. Three, I know from experience many asian collectors like their own coins, and big silver coins, (that is not racist, my wife is asian and I am describing her family). Four, I find them to be extremely high quality and attractive coins. So much so I bought a sheet of 2013's recently and will do the same for 2014's. I simply find them the most attractive "bullion" coins out there.

Having said that, counterfeits are a HUGE concern with this series. I doubt I would ever spend any real money on older examples unless certified.

Why are they a huge concern, are they making them out of pure gold yet?

They make US numismatic fake coins out of real gold, are those a HUGE concern too?

Well, since this question was about silver coins, then no. The silver fakes though are being made of just very high quality and in huge quantities. I know many dealers who do not buy uncertified early pandas, the fakes are that good. That was the reason for my post, I simply do not believe any other of these series has such high quality fakes being made in such quantites.

I agree and should have mentioned that. Initially, I was buying Chinese coins raw, but now that I am more seasoned with Chinese coins almost all of my pricier ones are slabbed, both Pandas and Fat Man dollars. I am willing to pay a few bucks more for slabbed older Pandas. I believe the Chinese market is a bit skewed compared to other markets, so that if you buy older coins slabbed you are going to get rewarded when you attempt to resell. The saying "buy the coin, not the slab" may not hold true for collectors of Chinese coins, given how well the counterfeits are made. As they say, there is an exception to every rule.

I believe the low mintage ship has sailed. Most everyone is expanding their mintage numbers to accommodate demand. Captain Hindsight says "you should've bought some pandas ten years ago". :)

Maybe, but my recommendation was based upon current mintages. I simply view panda demand, (just as important as supply), as being higher than most other series, and with the subject matter I believe it will continue to remain so.

I would nominate the Somali Elephant, a series which hasn't been mentioned yet. The mintages are very low; the designs change every year; the quality is very good; the finish is very much proof-like and the selling price of previous issues seems to steadily increase.

ASEs, Maple Leafs, Philharmonics, Britannias (of late), Takus, Noah's Arks and Libertads are decent, but are very boring. Of this group, I would go with Libertads, based on design and production quality, coupled with mintage.

Older pandas seem good, but the mintages have greatly increased over recent years (as was mentioned above.) I really like the annual design change and quality. I would buy them for the enjoyment of the coin much more than future appreciation potential.

I also think there is some potential with the Perth Mint Lunar coins. I am not sure if this would be considered bullion or not though.

It really comes down to having your money in when a mint underestimates demand. It could happen with any series really. Buy them all.

I see the newer Pandas this way: because the mintages are lower than those of other countries, the Pandas will command a higher premium than other series. However, given the trend of higher mintages year after year from China, the premiums will gradually become reduced to those of other nations. For the time being, however, Pandas still carry a relatively large premium. Again, I expect the extra premium to disappear at some point.
