Start to look around at antique shops, coin shops, etc. Use this to know the value right now: http://www.coinflation.com/ Scroll down for current silver value of US coins.
You sound like me, as I just started stacking this year, so I'll tell you what I did. I bought a bunch of different 1oz world coins to discover what I liked. Some that you may want to look at are: American Eagles Mexican Libertad Fiji Taku Britannia Armenian Noah's Ark Philharmonics Canadian Maple Leafs These can all be found for a low premium over spot at different times from different sellers. Moving forward, I'm buying American Silver Eagles and Libertads. If you are having trouble deciding, you can't go wrong with those two. They are recognized and beautiful. As far as sellers, I've tried them all. I use Provident when they offer free shipping. Modern Coin Mart has good deals on EBay. For orders of 3oz or less, I've bought a lot of coins from Amagi Metals. Shipping was around $2.50 for 3oz and their prices are great.
Thanks you randrace. That is more of the type of response I was searching for. I know most if not all of the people on here have used one route or another (whether it was successful or they made some mistakes) and I just wanted to know of other people's opinions and hear their stories. Like I said, I am new and just want to hear how people have done things and to gain a few tips. Excellent response!! I like the look of the Maple Leafs and a lot of people prefer the American Eagles which are also very nice. I will have to check out some of those others your mentioned! Being new I like to hear of people's opinons of what they like because I simply don't know of everything that is out there. That is why it is hard for me to "pick a route and stick to it" like people have told me. I don't know what paths there are to take..This helps me a alot!
I like what I call "mildly numismatic coins" which I get near their melt value, but that could go up in value. For example if given the choice between '64 Kennedy halves and walking liberties I will go for the walkers every time. They might have more wear, but they already have a lot more value because they are older. It's just a little thing I do to increase the value of my silver instantly. As you become more familiar with the values of common US silver you will see what I mean. Here are just the silver coin values today on coinflation: http://www.coinflation.com/silver_coin_values.html
All those types of silver on coinflation are safe to buy if you can get them at or close to those prices. The only one I wouldn't get is the Eisenhower dollar. Ikes can be confusing and the 40% ones are few and far between. War nickels are fun, and can usually be found for around $2, so they have some numismatic value already, but not much.
If you want specifics for online sellers, I use www.comparesilverprices.com. compare a ton of reputable sellers all at once in real time. The only other consideration will be shipping.
Thank you so much for this man! I was just about to make a post asking what and why you would invest in one silver bullion coin over another. In still a little confused on it honestly. I'm currently playing it safe with ASE while I learn. Jeff
I had a great experience with gold bullion company in Australia that provides all information related to gold and silver bullion prices, price chart. By visiting the site you can know about selling and buying silver and gold bullion online.
My experience is that my local coin shop has the best deal on most of the silver I buy, such as pre-1964 coins and bullion like Silver Ealges, Chinese Pandas, Canadian Maples, etc. However, for some odd reason I can buy Morgans and Peace Dollars cheaper on ebay than I can at the local coin shop.
You got it. As far as investing in one coin over another, there are lots of reasons. Some things I've read on these boards and others that have stuck with me: Buy what you like. Buy bullion that is recognizable (ASEs, Maple Leaves, Libertads) by others making them easy to sell as needed. I also look for low premium world coins that may become collectible (and fetch a higher premium in the future.) Here's an example: Provident is offering free shipping right now on your entire order when you buy one of these items. One of those items is the 2013 1oz coin from Surname. Because this is the first year of a coin from Surname, there is a chance it become collectible. We'll see, but I'm happy as hell to be able to buy a 1oz silver world coin for $24.66 shipped!
I will also suggest to figure out what you want to collect. I started collecting about a year ago and started off with 90% coinage. I love the look of Morgan Silver Dollars as well as silver quarters and dimes. They can also be a cheap option if you only want a $1 face or so. I will also recommend Apmex and Modern Coin Mart as great online dealers. Be sure to also check out local flea markets as there always seem to be a few coin sellers there if you are looking to just pick up a few coins here and there.
