I planned on buying a quarter ounce coin. With shipping the cost is $410 to $420 depending on site. The Proof version on the US Mint is $447 with free shipping.

    I am looking at holding

Is there benefit paying an extra $27 to $37 from future value stand point proof vs bullion?

    Any thoughts or opinions welcome.

Not following these, but I’ve survived the downturn in pm’s for the most part by buying the mint collector version if the mintages are lower and only a small difference in price compared to the bullion version.

Though I don't buy gold, you might want to consider that the dealers selling them from their inventory are more apt to be selling those that would grade lower. It would probably be a good bet that they have already submitted them in bulk to one of the major grading services, and those that did not make the minimum grade were returned for them to sell raw. On the other hand, if you purchase one directly from the Mint, you have just as much chance at getting one that would grade higher.

    It's your choice.

I personally would go with the proof version the cost isn't that much higher and the coins are much nicer looking imo.

I don't buy gold myself, but I'd recommend going with the proof at that price. That's only 6.5% mark-up over the bullion coin price you referenced: you'll make a lot more than that on your eventual resell.

that's the best way to look at it. pay a little more for mint fresh. if the price diff was larger then maybe go the other way.
