Two points on this. First, not all comments are intended to change the minds of people who posted. Many other people read the thread and don't post, if my comment impacts them and helps them understand why this clearly unethical behavior is wrong then it was useful. Second, this is a community, and threads like these help set the standard for behavior we as a community think is appropriate. If the OP does not recieve pushback its a tacit agreement with his behavior. I might not change his mind but at least he knows people disagree with him. People complain all the time about the unethical behavior of coin sellers. It's just as appropriate to call out the unethical behavior of buyers.
That is NOT what the last bullet says and furthermore eBay needs to follow their rules or enforce them. That last bullet specifically mentions something about making offers through a best offer option to settle outside of eBay. NO ONE here arguing has done that. Secondly read the next set of rules again. That pertains particularly to the seller and from ebays own rules it is against THEIR policy to allow linking to or advertising towards their own website or real life shop. I got news for you, us buyers would have very few methods left to contact sellers if ebay enforced this rule. So if eBay has a problem with buyer/seller communication you would THINK eBay would pull/ban all of those listings that include the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the sellers shops. However eBay hasn't pulled those accounts down and therefore I have no problem picking up the phone and calling dealer XXX to make a deal. If eBay has a problem with how business is being done then maybe THEY should do something about it.
Oh and that very first sentence of these rules allows me to bypass eBay. I never used eBay to contact the seller. I used my telephone and CoinTalk The second sentence is arbitrary since they would have no way of knowing I contacted the seller nor could they prove that I just didn't google their user name and it turn out to be their B&M business name. Essentially they cannot prove that I took an address, business name, or listed telephone number from their site. The second 2 points are what I was referring to by eBay enforcing their rules. I don't write the listings nor do I approve them for auction, so eBay only has themselves to blame when I use a sellers phone number to contact them directly. So again I ask you, what rule have I broken?
Now you are saying you phoned a vendor. Your story has been changing since your original post. It's hard to keep track of what you did.
Care to take that to court and see what the outcome is? BTW, that second sentence may be arbitrary, but the arbiter is eBay. They probably will not take you to court, but you may well have to find another source for your coins. And, yes, they do enforce their rules. I have heard of several case doing just that.
I get that, I do not question that there are a ton of happy ebay consumers. I question the honesty of some who claim to have never done some of the things I stated in the original posting.
I ignore requests to take listings down and sell off ebay. And I don't ask sellers to do it. It is against the rules. The seller doesn't benefit much because he's reducing his price, so it is a very easy rule to follow and you shouldn't be surprised that people do adhere to it. BTW, I don't think you're a bad person. But maybe your youtube fame has gone to your head.
I'm glad you think I'm not a bad person, after all I do security work for a living...I think the YouTube comment was pretty funny too.
Actually it hasnt, I have contacted MULTIPLE vendors in various different ways. The 2 most recent (and where i am drawing my examples from) were the ones that i phoned a dealer who's number i found on ebay (actually his whole B&M store info), and the second was the one i found through CoinTalk. So no my story has NOT changed.
Well for a very obvious reason I wouldnt care to take that to court. Ebay has millions of dollars at their disposal to 'buy' whatever outcome they wish in a court of law. Essentially just keep my attorney fees so high that i am forced to surrender and 'plea'. But on evidence and principle, and using their own rules against them in the form of a technical loop-hole, yeah that would hold up. Much like how they exploit loop-holes....to them that is just good business, same goes for me. Its good business to protect my moneyed interests.
I am amazed that you are so surprised that there are that many ethical people out there. Imagine how well this country would run if everyone ignored all the rules and laws they chose to. The last thing you would worry about would be eBay rules and not just because eBay would not exist.
Heres what I am saying. If ebay was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo concerned about people like me doing business outside of ebay, then surely they would remove listings such as these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1936-GETTYS...16?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item3f288062e8 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1866-S-25c-...94?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item2c6d11a806 So if you have a complaint maybe you should take it up with ebay and get these sellers banned, hmm?
Or how about pages like this one that SPECIFICALLY direct you to their Facebook and twitters, etc where you could easily make an offer there as well http://stores.ebay.com/lowcountrycoinscom or even the same seller showing pictures of his B&M in the listings. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1944-Wheat-...=WDVW&rd=1&ih=027&category=11944&cmd=ViewItem It doesnt take a genius to open a phone book or a tab with google and search "Low Country Coins, Charelston SC" to find an address and phone number
What about APMEX? http://stores.ebay.com/APMEX It is against Ebays own rules to allow direct contact for sales outside of ebay and sellers arent supposed to post their own company's info on an ebay store or listing, but here it is. And by an ebay partnership no less. What can any of you say about this? APMEX is in ebay's pocket and this is still allowed?!? I think the anger and accusations by certain forum users would be better off directed towards ebay and not savvy users who can save themselves some money from time to time. It would seem that ebay turns a blind eye to these types of things and if there is a problem it should be addressed at the source, not the ones taking advantage of the loop-hole. Hint, hint, Ebay is the source.
I think you turned a blind eye. When you include shipping and the credit card fee, Apmex actually offers the same or lower prices through their ebay store. There is not much incentive to do business outside ebay. But again, this is not the same case or even the same rule that the original poster broke so I don't see why you bring it up except for your anti big business bias.
At the end of the day what i did ethics wise may be wrong. That does not change the fact that I still think speaking for myself that i did what was financially best for me.
