After receiving my 2013 two coin set I decided to compare the EU to my other coins from the previous two years of special sets. The 1st set I opened was my 2011 5 coin set. Right away I noticed that my proof coin in the set had started to tone at the top of the coin. The Mint paper sheet describing what the set contains was still in the box where it was when I received it. Did this sheet cause the toning? I think so. - All stored under the same conditions. I quickly opened all of my other ASE proof coins and the only other coins that were starting to show toning were the two proofs in my 2012 special sets. They both also had the mint paper sheet with the coins. All of my other proofs include the sheet but outside of the box that holds the coin capsule. The toning is most noticeable on the 2011 and its a light gold along the top of the coin. Not bad, but not something I really want to progress. I took the sheet out of the 2011 and 2012 boxes and also my new 2013 box. If you still have your coins stored raw the way the mint shipped them to you, you may want to check on them and move the paper sheet to the outer box. I would be interested to hear if anyone else has seen this same issue. BR ~ Darryl It's really hard to see on the 2012 but it is there along the top rim of the coin.
I just had my sets opened yesterday to do some imaging of the reverse proofs for a friend on another forum. The Eagles all looked as good as on the day I locked 'em away.......sorry you're having these troubles Darryl and I hope separating some of the mint packaging solves your problems. Please forgive my scandalous opportunity to post them here........
Hey Green I caught it early enough that it's no big deal but if a couple more years had gone by without checking them it could have been a different story. This is more about letting others know and finding out if anyone else has had it happen to them. I cannot imagine that I am the only one.
I just checked my 25th ase, the only special set I own. At first glance something seemed off but after really inspecting them I think I'm ok. I think it's wise to to check every so often to ensure integrity. Thanks for the heads up man.
I would think the mint would know better. Take a look at your capsle. It may have a small crack in it. They are supposed to be air tight just like an airtite. The sulfur can't penetrate through the plastic. It must have an air passage into the coin.
Its happening on both the 2011 and 2012 sets. Lol - the mint should know better. Think about all the years the mint has shipped products that end up toning as a result of thier packaging. The SMS sets from 1994 and 1997 are perfect examples. Every nickel still in the original packaging has likely toned gold. I am not sure that the capsules they use are made by the same company that makes airtites or if they are in fact air tight. Does the mint claim anywhere that they are air tight?
I have no idea how the SMS sets are packaged, I don't buy them. Are they in individual capsles or some type of mass packaging? The latter is never air tight. By air tight, we don't mean forever, but certainly more than a few years. No one would make that kind of claim, not the TPG's, the Airtite company nor the mint.
The SMS were mass packaged but the point was more to say the mint does not seem as concerned about toning as some collectors are. Or as a collector if you are concerned about toning don't rely on the mint packaging. I should have paid more attention to the fact that the mint put a piece of printed paper right next to my new white coins. Probably not the best way to store coins long term.
