The mint offers a 90% proof set. Thoughts on the set? Any long term value here? Are you essentially buying junk silver or do these have any collection value?
Yep, I buy all the 90% silver proof sets - I think they have potential with sales declining. Either way, just cool having the traditional composition.
I see it as junk, but it's in great condition, I buy them when they're at melt. The problem for stackers with these sets is the room it takes up....I could put 1500 grams in bars in the same space.
From what I've seen most of the ones selling for melt have problems. In the long run, a slight premium for no problem coins will be worth the extra paid.
Could you expand on your thoughts. When you say selling for melt where are you referencing? Would the non problem coins be direct from the mint? Do the mint coins have problems? Thanks
Selling for melt refers to selling for their metal value. Yes, some coins from the mint have problem, but ordering from the mint gives you the best chance of getting PR70 coins at the lowest cost. Many order from the mint, keep the PR70’s and PR69’s and dump the lower grades on eBay. The only way I’d buy any from eBay is if the are cetified.
I'm going to guess me and you buy them different ways, I don't buy from dealers, I'm the person people take their silver and gold to when they're looking for a better price than local dealers....I don't go out looking for Mint sets, they just come to me every now and then....I see no numismatic value in them at all unless graded a 70.
Mr. Roots are you a coin dealer or have a shop? I want to get the 5 oz pucks mint sets for designs I like or have been to. I don't want to get every state in that would be very expensive just for the sake of collecting. I was thinking of getting the proof set to have all the coins and then the 5 oz ones I want. If I buy from the mint in their sets is it likely to be a 70 quality or is it the luck of the draw?
I'm just a stacker who knows a lot about collecting coins and other collectables. When you buy from the mint I'm going to guess that you'll get about 60% 69s 20% 70s and 20% 68 or lower.....I've never sent coins off for grading so thats a 100% guess.
