I'm not sure if this information is already known or of what value it is but I called to check in on an order of one of my 5oz ATB coins and when I asked the operator about the status of my two coin set she told me that they were really slow this week because they were doing an inventory of the mint and it's products. This was her explanation to why it took so long to process my order for the ATB coin. (I placed he order Saturday and it finally was shipped today). She also told me that the 2-coin set is being made to order so that's another reason for the delay. Just tid bits of info in case it hasn't been heard.
Update on Silver Numismatic Product Pricing from MintNewsBlog.com June 26, 2013 And it's widely known that the 2-coin 2013-W ASE sets were sold, mint-to-demand.
I know it's widely known I just posted it because that's what she told me. I would have thought they could have expected a minimum and started producing them ahead of time but that doesn't seem to be the case I wish I would have had that article before I placed my most recent order. Oh well.
You have a seven day return policy on your order from the US Mint. . As soon as the mint finishes repricing their inventory, reorder any items you find selling for less, and when the first order arrives, send back the things you overpaid for. Though do the math to see what the cost of return shipping will cost, and whether it defeats the purpose.
I'm starting to understand the appeal of certain labels, because I came into a 2012-S a couple weeks ago in the PCGS red label and I thought they looked really sharp. But, with an OGP set directly from the Mint you have a chance at getting perfect coins. This might not be a big deal right now, but ten years down the road if these coins appreciate in value you're probably going to have something much more desirable compared to coins already deemed imperfect in an attractive holder.
I didn't think of the angle of obtaining 70s, but at the same time if I bought OGP, that's how they would remain. My concern with the black NGC holders was that you had to be a bulk submitter and there had to have been only XXX amount of those stabbed like that and might create a scarcity/desirability issue I feel like down the road. You don't see many black holders anyway so I don't know what to do. I feel like once the big guys sell out of the black holders you will see premiums on the ones you can find.
That's what the "big guys" want you to believe to get you and others to pay the high prices out of the gate for the colored plastic or designers labels. Don't be fooled by plastic and packaging. Buy the best quality coin you can, and if it's graded by a third party, buy only a coin who's grade you agree with from your own assessment of that coin.
Gosh dang, splitting the hairs again. Making rarities out of otherwise common coins. Shoot Trey, I thought you drank beer or bourbon.......not koolaid.
I think they have things screwed up on shipping. I ordered late the first day and people, days afterwards, have shipping notices and charges pending on their CC. So it's not first in first out. The whole delivery process is out of whack. If I do get something less than what I call a MS69, I'll be suspicious of it being a return, especially if blemished. I might add, it will be returned again. There are coins I would like to own, but there is no coin (Or thing) that owns me.
I understand your frustration Sam......easy enough for me to say since I've got mine in hand, but I truly do.
God's teeth, I think I dated her at some point in time Yak......... Though it was way after closing time.........
Ok let me simplify this down just a bit cause I am a bourbon and beer kind of guy. I like the coin, no doubt about that. I WILL own one (maybe 2 sets). So that's not the issue. I have no problem paying the base price for the coin as I've already made my purchase from the mint. I am still waiting though, so I don't know when I will see it. My dilemma is multi-faceted. I am slightly impatient, but not to the point where I can't wait. So that's one reason I am leaning towards a graded set (I didn't see where silvertowne was selling the black 69s for more than any other label 69s), it could be here in just a few days, where as who knows the arrival date from the mint. If I give up my OGP set there's no more of those being made. The black label is in a similar situation so I am asking which would be the better buy? Or which would carry a higher premium down the road? I'm not concerned about the coin itself I will appreciate it either way, but down the road which would carry the better value? The retro label 69 or an OGP set? So the breakdown goes in my mind something like this: I can have a guaranteed NGC 69 in a 'cool' black labeled holder for $30 more and have it in a couple of days. Or I can have a possible 70 OGP (could be a 68 though), have to wait indefinitely, but also the fact that its original as issued. In 40 years which do you think would be more desirable? . . . . . . . . . You know after seeing it written down like that I now know what I should do. I'm gonna stick with the OGP and just love my coin(s), why do I need to worry what the folks do after me, I only bought one set, so as long as I'm happy with the coin the holder is irrelevant. I'll let the people after me worry about that crap on this one.
I have to say that I prefer them in OGP, by a lot. The issue to me is OGP takes up a lot of space, but that is a small price to pay to not have my eagles in plastic coffins. I also don't really understand the 1st in 1st out, mostly because I don't know how many could've ordered within 4 minutes of the sales open, then get them in hand and have them graded. I do understand that the TPGs will look out for the businesses that pay their bills, so I don't really have too much of a beef. One thing I really don't get is that just about every set I've seen, the enhanced uncirculated seems to have a flaw of some type. Take a good look between the T and Y in liberty on the obverse, and tell me there aren't some spots there? I see it on most of the 70 sets too.... that or I'm getting old eyes...
My order went from 7/11 to 7/27 to 8/8 today. I ordered on the second day and now will likely get them later than most. I don't think the mint sends out, first come first serve.
Maybe so many collectors canceled their orders and went the TPG route, that they are going to ship another large order to the big dealers to fill requests? That pushed all the small orders back to their original or even later dates. If you were lucky enough to get delivery before they made the decision to do this, your home free.
