French bashing has largely fallen out of favour with the change of executives in the US government. There are still some holdouts as seen above, but they are largely drowned out by the majority. French fries or freedom fries?:yes:

Shoot, I was going to wisecrack "send it UPS or FDX" but those two companies have stopped accepting those forms for shipping within France. And the fact that no formal announcement (along with no coverage in the media) was made by the French government is a tad disturbing.

But the French do enjoy our American 'Jazz' so they ain't all bad..........

 

And they revere Jerry Lewis as a god.

I know the history, and know why we have some current tensions, but don't understand the animosity. Yes, they are cocky and condescending, basically they sound like Americans.

Regarding the story, I wonder how the French mint sells any products now? Seems pretty weird. I understand the whole background of prohibiting ownership of gold, infringement of rights, etc, I guess I am too much a collector and worried about French coin collectors.

 

Maybe I'm interpreting this wrong, but looking at the underlying intent of the regulation, I read it as shipments of either bullion or of cash payments. I would expect that collectibles are excluded.

I just made a rather large purchase from a dealer in France. I sure hope I don't get caught up in this issue. My biggest fear is that La Poste may now have an easy out for a claim against a lost package.

Hmm, here in Germany your UPS has not even "stopped" offering such a service (sending coins from DE or within DE, that is) - they have never offered it, and explicitly say in their terms that you cannot use UPS for mailing such valuables. Fortunately DHL/Deutsche Post does, provided the customer uses Value Mail.

No formal announcement? Well, the change was certainly not announced way ahead of time. No coverage in the media? Not quite right, but I suppose that Prism is more heavily debated these days than Freedom Fries. And yes, some dealers are annoyed to put it mildly. Then again, how to react? "Nous n'appliquerons pas cette loi" - ie. we will basically ignore it.

I think that is the key for most shipping company and insurance policies. They could care less if you send cash or bullion, but don't come crying to them if it doesn't make it to its destination. Why would they care? It's not hazardous and you can't file a claim for it, so it's all reward no risk.

The law on the other hand is different than the policies of private companies. I don't mind violating policies, but I don't want Johnny Law knocking on my door.

 

That has always been in their tariff but certain shippers seem to get around it. There was a time when they even delivered (on a regular basis) coins from the US mint. Now it's only next day air that they use for high value items. For them (UPS) to stop accepting these types of shipments means that they got wind of something months ago........
