Scrapping for Silver

Well since I got a pretty good deal on those half dollars I decided to go back to my LCS. They are completely out of half dollars!!! Crazy...so I got another dollar face in quarters instead...


These are all 64's...and really shiny too...

You are so lucky to have a LCS that will sell silver right now, at a decent price that is!

 

What is the best way to strip wire I went to a Estate sale they said fill a shopping bag for 2 bucks Got some tools, extension cord (copper?), alot of Audio visual wire and old power cords.

 

Tomorrow i get to bid on buying my biggest deal ever in scrapping.
Its a greyhound bus that was used by a family that bought it to transport members of a family band around.
Its gross weight is 38 thousand pounds and can still be driven on its own.
Also its less than 10 miles from a local junk yard.
Ive yet to give a price of buying it and will not until i am sure they will accept it and find out as close as possible how much it will bring.
This one sale will carry me over the top for all the lost hours i spent cleanning copper and time spent loading, separting and hauling it to be sold.
If the iron price holds this should bring over 4 thousand but that not what i get as i still have to reach a deal with the owner.Still it the biggest find yet.

 

I just use a razor blade and I run it along the wire sideways...there are tools out there that are specifically for stripping wire. Usually any power cord is copper..

 

I decided to try my luck at a pawn shop again since my first pickup. I walked in and they have various silver coins. I also saw almost the exact same set I have that I got from them initially and it's 15 bucks as well.(It has a 1943 steel penny/buffalo date was hard to read/1945 merc dime/1930 standing lib quarter/1943 Walking lib half). Was almost tempted to buy that set too. (tell me what you would do.) Anyway I asked them about the 90% halves and he said he was selling them for 15-16 bucks each!!!??? Needless to say I passed on that. Still tempted by that set though.

 

I would have jumped on the set. $15 is a good price for the silver, so the steelie and buff and any numismatic values on the silver only adds to that price. If they sell just halves for $15, why would they sell the set for $15?

 

I was asking myself that exact same question...

So I went in my LCS with the rest of the scrap/side job money I had been mulling around on what to get. Low and behold silver drops another 1.00 so I decided to act. I inquired again on premiums...New ASE's are down to 5.25 from 6.00...Maples I believe are still at or near 5. They had the generic round and bar bin for 2.50 over and they had off quality/colorized ASE's for 3 over. I took a look at those and decided on these...


I am going to do separate posts for each to show up close the "off quality"

 

The first of the 2 "off quality" ASE's is a relatively new one. It's a 2012, and sorry for the somewhat fuzzy pics. However, I was looking this over while I was there and for "off quality" its pretty darn nice. I personally think its better than some of the ones that come straight out of the mint tube...


I think this was definitely worth the only 3 over spot they asked...25.57

 

The second of the 2 is a little older. It's a 1990. Again looking at this one at the LCS I was quite surprised at the "off quality" label. The only thing I can think of is that someone may have polished this one up a bit because it definitely has a more noticeable luster compared to the 2012. But again...definitely worth the 3 over...also 25.57

I have the Pronghorn....and I have to say. The detail on it is just amazing. Very nice coin. Haven't gotten a bison yet but might very soon.

 

FINALLY, picked up 4 ASE's (random dates) and a "12" Panda at the coin show today. Ase's were $5 over spot, most dealers were 6 to 10 over spot IF they had them at all. All of them payed for by scrap, I'm so glad I decided to read this thread when you started it goodwin! I'll try to post photos either tomorrow or Monday. Thanks again for a really good idea!:smile

 

And with the mega tons of copper you get it should be amazing the amount of silver you get. And no thanks necessary...the idea just made sense.

 

More mega tons to come hopefully, we are starting another drug store and a Pier 1 Imports in the next week or so. They are both ground up construction, no demo. I can sometimes get even more if we are removing all the old wiring. In the mean time I'm keeping my eyes open on "trash day" in our neighborhood LOL.

 

Ok, here is what I picked up at the coin show last weekend. Cost? ZERO, all were bought with scrap. This is just fun I must say!

 

I am really having fun with this 2 more estate sales 6 more extension cords and some copper pipe do you think it is worth it to strip the copper or just sell it as insulated

 

Strip it. Unless its tiny wire, then leave it as insulated.

 

I really thought extension cored would be thick but its not lol

 

I've never stripped an extension cord... I would expect them to be thick as well. They're not?
