So, i'm about to start investing in silver bullion. I'll probably be buying about 1 ounce per month untill i have enough to stop. But when looking at the prices online i noticed that the Pamp Suisse bars cost so much more than all the other bullion bars. Is there a reason for them being priced so high? Or is it just like the difference between Ralph Lauren clothes and Gucci clothes where they just do it because they're the most known brand and can afford it? Well, i'll probably still be buying the Pamp Suisses untill the TridentSilver 1 ounce bars come out but i just wanted to know the reason for their price. I'm buying mainly for the investment but i wanted it to look good too so that's the reason i'm going for these two brands.
First, you can never have too much silver. Second, Pamp bars are priced more because they are a luxury silver bar. Many people like them because they have serial numbers, a cool design and come encapsulated. Third, if you are buying for investment, purchase silver that is the cheapest above spot(premium) and are the most recognized. Good luck! I hope this helps.
If you're wanting to invest just in silver, buy generic .999 fine silver rounds or do what most do, buy silver eagles and silver maples at a premium. I wouldn't pay too much over spot for generic. I started as a bullion investor, but that got boring, so then I found 1 oz rounds, but the premium is higher on those than 1oz bars or generic rounds. So if you want just silver, don't look at the coins, you'll fall in love with at least one design and before you know it, you're $12 over spot per oz! The Pamp Suisse, no idea why it's so much over priced, but i wouldn't touch it. Doubt it'll have that much of a premium if silver goes higher. It's amazing how much us tiny ants can accumulate over a long time with just one here and there. I'd check ProvidentMetals if you're looking one. I've dealt with them, never had a problem, got my bullion very quick. From Above: Tyler is correct, you can never have enough silver! :thumb:
Once you get to a point where you have as much as you would have considered enough when you started this thread, you'll switch to the "just one more" mindset. Just one more coin, or just one more roll, or just one more order. I'm not at that point yet, but this is already what I'm telling my wife. "Just one more..." :too-funny:
Well my "untill i have enough" was really meant as when my room looks like this but with bullion instead of money; http://www.exchangewire.com/images/2013/02/cash1.png
Don't buy the Pamps if you are going into this for investment purposes, it will be difficult, if not impossible, for you to recoup most or any of their exorbitant premiums when you go to sell.
Is Scottsdale Silver better for investing? I like their design too. And i do plan on buying some rounds eventually too but i like the design and shape of the bars. I collect the silver coins as well though like the pre-65s and the halves.
Okay, i'll start getting some bars of OPM soon. This one good? http://www.providentmetals.com/1-oz-opm-999-fine-silver-bar.html
And is it weird that Pamp Suisse is the cheapest bar of 2.5g gold i could find? http://www.apmex.com/Product/19042/25_gram_Pamp_Suisse_Gold_Bar_9999_Fine_In_Assay.aspx
This is probably the best deal if you are only going to buy one ounce at a time since its free shipping and a little over $3 over spot: http://www.silvertowne.com/p-11650-silvertowne-trademark-1oz-999-silver-bar.aspx Provident does typically have the best price on larger orders though, but for 1-3 ounces then silvertowne is usually cheapest with their free shipping.
Are you buying these from a coin shop or online retailers? If it was me, I'd buy a variety of current year or recent year government issue coins as close to spot as I could get them. ASE, Maples, Brits, Libs or whatever. If you happen to catch a numi bump or variety, all the better.
If you like bars I would suggest Johnson Matthey or Engelhard. They generally carry premiums better than most bars, in part because they are also serialized like the pamps, but not as expensive. You want serials on your bars IMO to help resale value because it helps diminish the probability of counterfeit. Otherwise I agree with government silver coins as PeacePeople outlined, which are also my preference. Although right now premiums on those are higher than generic, but the main benefit of generic is when buying in bulk. For one coin per month I'd just stick to eagles.
