Libertads are one of my absolute favorites. Low mintage and amazing design. The reverse? So much detail. Of the commonly printed bullion issues, I think Libertads are the best. Look at premiums for older issues and you'll see that the market agrees.
They are a favorite of mine also. I like the burnished look of the bullion. Also, the proofs are very eye-catching and can also be obtained for less than ASE proofs. Libertads have a much lower mintage than ASEs and they also have a growing, but rather quiet following. As they continue to catch on, and it seems they will, I think there is a good chance the value of previous years' issues will increase.
Howdy, I've got the Dansco album but it's hardly complete. Some of the older issues have enormous premiums. That said, I really like them and always have. Curious fact that if you travel to Mexico, one of the major appliance store chains (Elektra)actually sells libertads. The founder of this chain (Hugo Salinas) is a tout for going back to a silver backed peso and as such, he's doing his part. I was on a west coast cruise and bought some in Puerto Vallarta. It was very weird wandering through all these appliance back to the cage where I bought plata. peace, rono http://www.gold-eagle.com/editorials_05/oesterreich080505.html
I wish I knew that when I was there. I picked up some silver jewelry along the way but never thought about going into an appliance store for bullion. What was he asking over spot?
well, thanks! it seems they have a little following here. i think they are great looking bullion, but i have never seen one in person. soon enough. it eill be nice to have a little variety, and a new option to stack! thank you all again for the comments.
I like that the current design is also available (although not always readily so) in 2 and 5 ounce sizes as well. The earlier "1 Onza" version (made from 1982 through 1995) was smaller in diameter and but thicker than the present Libertad of the same weight, and can often be had for a nominal premium (or on occasion even none at all).
Howdy Sam, I don't recall any more - it was several years back. I have a habit of this. When wifey and I went to PV 20 years ago, I was buying silver napkin rings. When I was on R&R to Bangkok, I bought a star saphire mounted in an 18K ring. Still have it. But then I bought a Rolex Submariner in HongKong in 1968 for $97 including tax. [cha-Ching!] The joys of travel. Geez, how can anyone go by a duty free store without scoring a couple of bottles? Particularly the local specialty? peace, rono
I like libertads but I also like these as the coin is thicker and smaller in diameter ,again not as easy to find as other bullion coins.
