I've purchased the first 15 pucks from the mint. I noticed this weekend that NQ3 is selling for over $500 on ebay. Why has this one taken off while the others languish in the doldrums? I know that they only made about 15,000 of them but it isn't much different than the NQ2 or NQ4. Why the upcharge?
Popularity of art and design, in addition it appeals with a a wider audience who is familiar with this park. Which are a lot of tourists and newlyweds. There's a lot going for it in spite of the lofty mintage, demand exceeds supply on this one.
Like a lot of modern issues, for some reason this one got "hot" and is being pushed up by greed on Ebay. I would wager wait a few years and you will get it much cheaper. The record is replete with "hot" moderns that could be purchased for less than half price after a few years.
Just a design issue. People picture it as an exotic island and a place they would like to visit. Plus, volcanoes have a natural interest to practically everyone. If you were to only own one, this is the one that has the most appeal. I currently have but two. Hawaii and the fist issue, Arkansas. Both purchased at the introductory price.
I bought the Volcano and Denali hockey pucks last September at the price of $229.95 each. It seems that they both have increased in value but the Volcano is really beating my expectations. I really like the Acadia but I'm originally from Maine and often go there in the summer for vacation. I've been to Hawaii but enjoyed the beach. I'm not really into volcanos but I needed NQ3 to continue with my set. Hopefully, they will all appreciate in the future like the NQ3.
I see this puck BIN for ~$500 and selling for $330. If you can unload yours to a suck for 5 Benjamins ea, do it! These will be selling for $200-250 in a couple of years, w/higher POS too. The hype/fad will wear off - it always does. Smart money SELLS at peaks, chief.
It's a design that appeals to more people than the others. It's a lot different than the other quarters in the series. In fact it's different than all the other US coins. There is actually something exciting happening (lava is spewing!). The Mint might want to take notice for future designs.
Exactly: it's postmodern design vs. the rest. Combined with the low mintage... I actually prefer several other designs far more, notably Gettysburg. I also enjoy mountains and quadrupeds, however HI is far different from the typical landscape.
A Hawaii sold last night for $545. Its the unique design that makes the Hawaii so popular. No way does the Hawaii P-Puck go for $200-$250 in a couple of years, and I'll put my money where my mouth is. Any takers.......??? I sold a duplicate Hawaii for $575 a few weeks ago. .
Back in the real world, most Hawaii pucks are selling in the ~$350 range (or less) : SOLD auctions are proof. Who would overpay much more, now? A fool and his money are soon parted as they say. 4/3/2013: $343. http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-oz-Hawaii-Volcano-BULLION-ATB-America-the-Beautiful-Silver-Coin-/171017277374 4/3/2013: $336. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-P-5oz-Silver-Hawaii-Volcanoes-NP-A-T-B-25c-NGC-SP69-ER-/221209725600 4/1/2013: $350. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-Hawaii-Volcanoes-America-the-Beautiful-ATB-999-fine-Silver-5-oz-Quarter-/271178507810 3/31/2013: $318. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-5-Oz-Silver-America-The-Beautiful-Hawaii-Volcanoes-NGC-MS68-DPL-ER-SKU26777-/130866789670 3/6/2013: $311. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-HAWAII-VOLCANO-5-OUNCE-999-SILVER-COIN-BU-/160984172379 March 2013: 5 SOLD $329. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hawaii-Volcanoes-5oz-ATB-Silver-Raw-Bullion-Coin-America-The-Beautiful-/300885489835 Believe these pucks will be selling for less than $200 soon enough. A -$150. haircut would only be a -50% retrace against glaringly obvious price-peak coin-speculation. That's nothing crazy, happens all the time: think BEANIE BABIES! So many idiots also thought those were a "great investment" once-upon-a-time. Then the 'Royal Blue Peanut 3rd gen hang tag/1st generation tush tag' that noobs presumed so 'rare &valuable' LOST ~-98% of it's value. Once SOLD for $3,000. ... ya, now it's $380. (if a vendor's lucky!) Did we learn anything from that fad/hype? http://www.ebay.com/itm/16-TY-Beanie-Babies-Collection-Rare-High-Value-Mint-Beanies-Lot-1993-thru-1999-/370784458307 Many US collectibles tell a similar story: caveat emptor! Hawaii pucks are not/ will not be different. Smart buyers avoid "crazy prices" anyway. Thanks for the heads-up!
Juan, as usual you're comparing apples to oranges. You keep pulling up auctions on the "bullion version" and that's not the Hawaii that we are talking about. The bullion version looks like crap compared to the Hawaii P-Puck (collectors version). The collectors version Hawaii will always be in strong demand, only 9 on Ebay. All 9 are graded priced $540-$900....NO RAW HAWAII P-PUCKS. Look for the nice raw examples to grow stronger...$600+ Hey Juan, you're good at pulling up past auctions so pull us up some Hawaii P-Pucks (collectors version) and post them. We've done this before and you never once came up with any. Pull up the ungraded ones, there are plenty to choose from, I checked. Remember, collectors version, collectors version, collectors version.
Rubbish. They're ALL bullion pieces, period. See the first example I posted? It's SLABBED, "for collectors" etc., graded, etc. The second example is a P-puck for ~$330 although other vendors are trying to get $900.!! http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-P-Amer...z-Hawaii-Volcanoes-SP70-FS-PCGS-/330895901678 I cannot imagine anyone else blowing 300 bucks for Ag bullion, either. What non-collector would???! An idiot. Sorry but the hype around these vastly overpriced coins is for rookies who deserve to get robbed on ridiculous premiums (for trifle distinctions like "super rare!!!! double-plus-good VAM" or whatevah.) These coins will trade down soon enough. p.s. Last I checked, this is the BULLION INVESTING forum. Here we can attack bad investments on the simple basis of absurd price. hth
Hi guys, Actually, Captain Price will do, willy-nilly, what he wishes. There are two distinct markets involved here - that for the street bullion version and that for the mint issued version. The mint issued version has been slabbed a lot, not unlike ASE's and all their permutations - First Strike, Blue Label, dingleberry clusters, etc. There is a market for the 70 FS issues that is completely disconnected from that of a plain vanilla BU bullion ASE. Don't confuse them. Now, there is still the simple fact that humans being the way the are treasure some things more than others. How many peeps even know WTF Chaco Culture or El Yunque is? OTOH, we all know Hawaii and many have visited or want to visit. Will this abnormality last over time? feh. Some times they do and sometimes they don't. Tastes change. peace, rono
Agreed, and the dingleberry market is obviously peaking ... but why spend $335. when you can spend $900.!!! We just need a bullionist on CT to commit $900. then we can call that "the market" and turn off the lights
Sorry, but I don't see this issue as having some kind of "special appeal" because "everyone wants to go to Hawaii". Just don't buy it. Maybe a little extra because of topical collectors of volcanoes, but that is about it. If all future mintages are higher, maybe this will be the "key" and keep its premiums. I would be nervous, though, of any mintages in the future. If they are smaller than this one, I would fear people would recognize its no longer key and its price would plummet back into the price range of all other ATB P issues, whatever range that would be. Just my opinion.
The Hawaii P is the lowest mintage of all of them – the lowest mintage usually enjoys a significant premium over the rest. For a collector coin, the mintages of all the P pucks are ridiculously low, so, in the long run we should see moon prices for all of them if/when the series catches on with collectors.
I'm sure there will be lower mintage pucks. It could easily happen this year. If they cut production to half of the 2012 level it wouldn't surprise me. 14,000 is very high for an unpopular and expensive product. Hawaii pucks will come down fast and people who like the design can enjoy it on the regular sized quarters.
Maybe lower mintages in 2013, if they make them. The 2013’s release dates were pulled and put on the TBD list. Anyone hear anything about the 2013’s fate?
