That is a good idea, but you are only hedging in one direction, that it will appreciate against the dollar. True hedging would be to take an opposite position also to offset any possible downward movement just as you need its value. Perhaps with other investments or put options on a PM ETF.

If this dooms day scenario happens to play out, and the economy collapses, industry would sure to fail. Without industrial demand for silver, don't you agree there is a possibility that there may be very little demand for a commodity that does nothing? Secondly, if I am incorrect, and silver does maintain value, have you thought through the very likely scenario, that PM's would wind up in the hands of the folks with the biggest armies, instead of those who stacked it?

Depends on whether you live in Idaho or Boston, and whether you can keep your mouth shut.

In real nitty-gritty chaos, there are only two possibilities, non-paper MONEY, and barter. Gold and silver are the only forms of non-paper money I know of, and it's been that way since the Chinese invented paper money centuries ago. Barter is OK, I guess, but grossly inconvenient, not to mention the fact that to get food, you have to offer something that the food-guy wants more. Maybe ammo or gasoline. My landlord would evict me (rightfully) if he found out I was hoarding ammo (I'm not). If you live out in the sticks, and hoard fuel, someone will steal your car or tractor (it's all gassed up).

Long before there's chaos, I believe we'd see a military coup. And I would support them 100% in preference to politicians.

Why? I get it that you don't agree with his point of view, but that doesn't mean he needs help.

In all honestly, I do believe there is a store of value in PMs, and that's one of the major reasons I buy and hold them. I also believe they are undervalued, and think I can come out ahead by holding them. Lastly, I use them as a savings account. I go about 25% of the year without any income, so I use them as a savings account. It's a whole lot easier to take cash out of a bank account than to sell some PMs, so I plan as best I can to sell when I know I'm going to need some cash and the price is in my favor. So far I have come out ahead, but I'm not naive enough to believe that will never happen, because I know that it could. (not saying I've never sold for a loss, but I haven't when I needed to cash in PMs for fiat)

that has nothing to do with doug's doomsday fantasies. I don't know if they're undervalued. I don't care.

Why don't you tell us, FryDaddy, without revealing any big secrets, how YOU plan to cope with hyperinflation?

I do a lot of things. Buying gold and silver is just a part of it. I'm not wearing a tinfoil hat.

It might be to you, but you seem to miss the point that there are a lot of children that are members of this forum. If you want them to read your posts calling others dumb, telling them to get help, and then inferring they wear a tinfoil hat, that's all good for you. I would prefer they read posts that show respect of opinion and decent treatment of each other. Sarcasm, humor and teasing is one thing, but not being respectful is another. Just my $.02.

good. I don't want kids to think the future is people walking around with a mercury dime in their pocket running the world because of some doomday scenario.

But running around telling others they're dumb, wear a tinfoil hat and they need to get help is a much better solution? Okey dokey..../

I'm with you. I don't want to scare the kids reading this forum with apocalyptic paranoia.

    Yea... We will :(

I started stacking for my future at age 7 (silver at $15).... I sold most at $49 and some change... I still stack 8 years after starting... ;)

The logical explanation is that something big (war, hyperinflation, etc) is coming, and many youth know this...

BTW, please don't attack eachother over this... preparing for the future is the reason all of us are alive today... our ancestors prepared for the future... so we should too!

There's really nothing to get out of sorts over. Nothing bad is going to happen. This 1951 Civil Defense video is evidence of that. Not to worry, the government has a plan. (This video is a classic.)
