Not much talk about these today......talking about the PROOFS. I bought 4 just in case the Mint makes a boo-boo.
I will buy my 2013 ASE proof along with a couple other releases in the next 30-60 days. I like to combine orders.
Got 2 with my subscription and ordered 5 today. I have a feeling this will be a low mintage year with the demand for silver so high. Plus I love eagle proofs.
I just can't see buying these "in case" the Mint goofs or doesn't make enough to go around. IMO, The only ASE PROOFS that have increased and maintained their value as a sound collectors item are the 1993-5 ones where lower mintages exist. Now, if you collect these as a rule, then by all means get em. I just don't believe all these silver shortage rumors!
I have a complete set of certified Silver Eagle Proofs. I will send them into NGC. Keep a PF70 for myself and sell the rest at some point. Beautiful coin.
I'm putting mine on the shelf. I put in 2 single orders and an order of two, totaling four. Keeping these FS/ER boxes sealed until who knows when.
I don't collect'em, although I do get in on the special issue ASE sets. I'm saving up for the 2013 set, rather than dump a bunch on what will probably be a high mintage coin, unless the mint messes up AGAIN.
that's how I do it. probably get the proof with the west point set when it comes out. and maybe a commem, have to see. I get all the proof ASEs just for fun.
I'm figuring to wait until the uncirculated offering to order my proof and save on ship. Maybe there will be other stuff to bundle up by then. On the other hand, I'm also thinking about buying slabbed instead so long as related premiums are reasonable. Maybe MCM would be a good choice for that. Already have decided to stop buying the proof silver sets from the mint since after a year or two my local dealer sells them for silver content plus about 15% premium. So if silver doesn't make a hard run northward, those will be cheaper. That dealer also looks at greysheet though and will not sell like that for 'in demand' sets. So it's a two fold gamble what with the lower mintages we have started seeing. Don't look now, but bid-iots are swarming this auction. Almost makes me want to start an ebay store selling such things.
So rookie question here... what I am assuming you mean by this is that once the eagles are out in force, people will cherry pick them and get them rated. Only the best of the best (insert Top Gun theme music here) get graded out at 70. The rest of the proofs - even though in theory they're all identical - might be lower. Is that a correct understanding of the process?
The proofs will either be graded a PF70 or PF69. On a rare occasion you will find a PF68. Instead of taking the risk of purchasing my own and having it graded for it to come back a 69, I would rather spend the little extra and just get a 70 already graded. Will cost me like $20-$30 extra buying a pregraded one vs sending my own in to get graded. I can tell you that when I used to get 50 a year, roughly 45 of them would be 70's and 5 would be 69's.
Thanks for the explanation, I appreciate it. I have been buying proofs (2 a year, one for each of my sons) for the past 3 years. I've just left them in the regular mint packaging and have not worried about grades too much. Well, not at all. Is there a big premium for a PF70 over a PF69 on the resale market? 5%? 15%? more or less?
I have a question on using these as collectibles... is it important to keep the COA and the blue box they come in? Or can I just keep the coin in the holder it comes in (the plastic coin holder, not the entire box)? I know as a buyer, I would prefer to buy the coin in the box, and with the COA. But as someone who is potentially storing a bunch of coins for a bunch of years, it would be easier to ditch the box and keep just the coin...
