Apmex is the premier bullion seller on Ebay now with their new relationship with Ebay. Personally, I find Ebay the most expensive source for bullion usually. I buy coins there, but not bullion.
o.k., well I know them already. Any others stand out, head & shoulders above the 'little guys'? 'Juan Blanco' was the colonial Spanish name for platina - not mine, obv.
I've never been able to find a 'Buy it Now' deal on ebay that could beat the main 3 dealers I prefer, in this order: Gainesville Coins, Provident Metals, APMEX. What I have gotten off eBay were things these dealers did not have in stock.
You ever try a good coin show Inflexion? I found, (when PM was down and I was in a mood to buy more), last summer that the cheapest source by far was there. Basically, ignoring shipping, I could buy silver at one times face less at a show than any of the dealers you just named. There were even some world gold coins at melt there, (BU coins selling for KM gold content). Just a thought. I know other geographies have different markets, so it always pays to check out every possible source.
I would just like to say that when it comes to buying PM's, the last place I look is eBay. Yeah I may miss a good deal, but person to person deals on forums at spot or less are hard to pass up. JMO.
MCM has a very large presence on Ebay now also. I can honestly say I haven't bought anything off of ebay for over a year, and don't miss it one bit.
Oh yes, been to more than I can count. I've missed the good ones this year because I've been meeting my buying quotas a little quicker than usual In general I find coin shows are best for generic coins, but I rarely find government bullion for cheaper than I can get it online or from a coin shop. Where coin shows do work out well are for the semi-numis which my LCS will overcharge for, but online is still comparable for the new releases, not so much the older harder to find stuff which is what I like the shows best for. I've found a few screaming deals, like war nickels for half of spot cause the guy was just roll searching for a set and dumping the rest, or a year 2000 lunar dragon for $15 over spot, but it's not very often.
Ok - I've never been to a show but my favorite LCS is always better than eBay or other online dealers. The online retailers/auctions have a wider variety.
Do the dealers at local coin shows charge sales tax on (for instance) junk silver? If so, that extra 5% to 8% surely puts them out of the running...
Generally speaking, dealers at coin shows do not charge a sales tax on bullion even if that coin show is located in a state that charges sales tax on bullion bought from a LCS. This is based on my own personal coin show experiences. The coin show IMO is the best place to buy bullion at the lowest premium possible. The bigger the coin show the better the prices IMO because there are more dealers and therefore more competition and that could lead to lower prices for the consumer. I like coin shows because I have found and bought several hard-to-find silver art bars at past coin shows for only .999 generic silver prices. It is also true that some states charge sales tax on bullion purchases and some states do not. For example, in my local area in Tennessee, there is a sales tax of 9.25% on bullion purchases while Georgia, which is very close to where I live, does not have a sales tax on bullion purchases.
Generally agreed, Log Potato. A few years ago I ran a little study (on client request) comparing auction fees with the alternatives; in 2009, eBay was NOT worth the risk. My interest here, however, is the AUCTION PRICE RECORDS. BIN is a useless metric, IMO. I DO believe eBay auctions tell you what market ASK is (underlying market-price) or 'trade.' For example, if a dealer is willing to sell Product A for $113. in a FeeBay auction, s/he'd probably accept $100. (net that eBay/PayPal fee!) in person. But you'd have to know that, to get that! eBay is great for market-price research. Also, just because eBay was 'not a great deal' formerly, that position in the list of alternatives might improve. (Or not.) At any rate, it's useful to check auction prices (and figure net) to glean insights into the true market price and see what better vendors are willling to trade at. Internet taxes will be a bigger factor in 2013 & 2014, I believe.
Nothing beats the LCS in cash purchases. However I have nabbed some good eBay deals from Scottsdale Silver. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I think Aydin is pretty good as well. They have their own website too so you can compare for the better deal. Sometimes it's at auction, other times a direct purchase from their site.
