Goverment dosen't sell gold bullion directly to the public. You can get collectible gold proof coins directly from the US Mint, otherwise for standard bullion coins you need to buy from an authorized purchaser from the mint. Personally I have ordered several pieces from APMEX.com and have been totally satisfied. Alternatively you can try looking at the bullion center on Ebay as they are the ones who run it. I have ordered from both and like the convinence of the Ebay/Paypal experience, but you will pay a bit more. I just took advantage of a free shipping offer they have which I just recieved today and am very happy.
Lately I have gotten some foreign bullion coins which are quite refreshing as compared to the standard ASE's and AGE's, plus some foreign mints make 1/20th oz coins which will make them a bit more accessible, but remember typically the smaller the denomination the higher the price per OZ~

Good luck and welcome to Cointalk!

The smaller gold pieces sometimes carry a larger premium over spot from the 1 Oz's. Something to think about.

Consider saving - you'll get more gold for more money with less premium.

Gold Eagles are a good example. You could buy 10 tenth ounce Eagles fror the same money as 1 one ounce and 1 tenth ounce Eagle. About a $200 difference.

If there are any local coin shows in your area, I recommend going there to look around. Most likely there will be at least 1 or 2 vendors selling 1/10 oz AGEs. Stick to government issued coins. I would not recommend the small 1g or similar "bars" (more like wafers). They are extremely difficult to sell after the fact.

I feel your pain. I've been wanting to collect Gold, Platinum, or Palladium for quite some time. But there just aren't really any entry-level coins. I've seen some of the 1 gram bars on eBay for around $79, as well as the two-peso coins for a bit more than that. The cheapest Gold Eagle is 1/10 ounce but runs around $200. But I'm like you, I have a budget of about $100 per month. And while I suppose I could save that money and buy a Gold Eagle every 2 months that would be boring. So instead I keep buying silver. In fact I rarely buy the Silver Eagles because they cost nearly $40 at this point. I'd rather buy several cheaper coins. I play around on eBay a lot and I like to have a coin of some kind coming every few days. So I shoot for coins that are around $15 and less.

I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I wish a reputable source (such as the US Mint) would create some kind of clad coins using gold or platinum. For example, have a coin the size of a half-dollar or larger with about $20 to $40 worth of gold or platinum plating on the outside. I'm not talking about electroplating, but rather how they did the 40% half dollar and Eisenhower coins. Which by the way are some of my favorite coins to collect because they are larger silver coins but are much more affordable.

People ask me why I want to collect gold if I can't afford it, and why not just be happy with silver? Well, I don't want to "put all my eggs in one basket" so I'd like some diversification.

If youre in it just for affordable gold, those love tokens at the bottom of the page on the first link seem alright. Youre just paying about $10 over spot for a small denomination. Itll never have any value over the content of gold, but if thats what youre in it for and cant afford the higher end options, well these seem like a winner to me. I might end up purchasing one myself as thats all i can afford is small gold (i started out with the 1 GRAIN rounds...talk about super tiny, but i was getting them at $.50 above spot).
