I also collect them at every opportunity. It makes a nice souvenir and certainly is better than the classical junk.
I hate these things. One word comes to mind: PMD (Actually I love 'em, but liking anything PMD is strictly taboo in the numismatic community)
I'll have to dig around I have a few (thousand) of them laying around somewhere. : ) Anyone bid on the ones that were just auctioned off for Ray Dillard?
You even got the collector book! (you're hooked - you'll be traveling 100 miles to get "the one") I got a couple in DC. A couple at Valley Forge. They are pretty fun. This one (1999!) is from Hayden Planetarium in Boston.
They might look cool now, but just wait. We had one that I should have at least took photos of, but they get pretty nasty after a couple years.
I pick up few every year at the FUN Show. I try to get different dates and mintmarks, but I always forget to take the list of what I already have. Chris
If my Route 66 one is zinc (and I think it is), it gives me a good reason to go cruise Route 66 - to get more elongated cents!
A little more maybe you didnt know stuff on elongateds.. First I agree with the using only pre 82 cents. the Zincers will look bad in a few years, some actually turn black. On most elongateds there is a tab on one end after its been smashed.. that tab is the grab in the die so that the die can grab the coin and pull it into the roller. Also notice on most elongateds you will see initials somewhere on the coin after rolling. (NEWER ONES) Perhaps its a RR or RWD or OP.. thats the engravers initials. RR is for Rocky Rockholt, RWD is Ray Dillard, OP is Oded Paz the current president of The Elongated Collectors Club. HERE There are hundreds of different engravers, I happen to collect ones rolled by Ray Dillard, Frank Brazzell, Oded Paz and Mike Mochizuki. If you like trains on elongateds, check out Mikes stuff.. (Google) Have fun and keep smashing as Prez Oded says..
