Picked up a 1987 Prestige Proof Set for $17. The silver content alone is worth (I think) more than $20!

Here are the latest sales figures for the past two weeks. 2011 Silver Proof Set sales were 769. 389 and 380 respectively. New total is now 563,889. As we all know, the 2010 final sales figure was 585,414. A difference of 21,525 between the two. With 33,111 of the 2012 Silver Proof Sets being sold in the past two weeks, it's new total is now 236,765

For years, the Silver Proof Sets have been a hot seller for the U.S. Mint. With the 2010 set having established a final sales figure and the 2011 set currently lagging 21,525 behind, WHO KNOWS how much selling power and electricity the 2012 set will generate among collectors. In the meantime, we as collectors will just have to wait and wattch this sales "Line Dance" to see if this 2012 "New kid on the block" can match or exceed the 2010 and 2011 numbers. The end results may be shocking.

    Time for an update!

    2011 silver proof sets: 566,845

    2012 silver proof sets: 296,857

    Don't miss out!

I stopped by an LCS and saw 2004 and 2005 silver proof sets, which I didn't yet have but really liked, due to the changing nickle designs. He checked his grey sheet and quoted $81 for both, which was $9 less than the silver + fiat value. Free Money :hail:

yea, i picked up a run of 2000-2006 silver proof sets right at spot through an online retailer the other day, with free shipping ... it really is free money, these sets seems undervalued.

I will get all my numbers together and post them today. The latest sales numbers should be out today, so hopefully I can include them. They usually show up in the mid-afternoon on Tuesdays, Pacific Time.
Good eye Topcat Coin for spotting that news article. I didn't think anyone was interested in this thread anymore, so I haven't posted in months.

I too collect the silver mint proof sets. I like the silver Kennedy and dime. I bought an additional 2010-2012 Silver proof set for my Dansco album I am putting together. I am a bit behind on getting some of the S business strike ATB's. I wonder if the mint will continue the business strike S's for the ATB quarters next year. Part of me is kind of hoping they discontinue it. It's getting rather pricey to acquire all these quarters for my album. I don't mind it so much, but it seems the mints going overboard in some areas. They should do the nickel in silver in the Silver mint proof sets. Now THAT would be nice!

I'm guessing that rather than "free money" the OP is STILL CARRYING A LOSS (from 8/11/2011) of ~-19%, on the intrinsic value from then.
Rather amazingly, I see these on eBay auctions for ~$55.89 - $64.55 ... with BIN at ridiculously higher (suckers') prices.
Completed sales in the Sept 1 - Oct 30 target price range from $72. down to $49. lots more people overpaying still. Too muck kookiness, there.

It's still nowhere close to 'free money' for any Seller (paying ~15% in fees to eBay/PayPal) who paid $67.95 : again, that's a -19.25% Loss.

10/30/2012: POS @ USD$ 31.87 and with an intrinsic value (dated) @ $42.66 per set, the 'premium' over Spot on this Mint product is still ~31 -51% for the overpaying eBayer auctions. Smart money bids with confidence and discipline ~ $49. - 55. at today's POS. If POS falls, Bids should drop as much, by %age.

Don't overpay, lowball bid instead. Also, there are TONS on these sets glutting the mkt. I'd bet this 'collectible' softens up big time when the economy weakens in 2013-4; those premiums will fall dramatically ... likely, better buying opportunities lie ahead.

So far: the 2010 Sliver Mint Set has been a BAD investment and quite the opposite of "free money."

The world's not ending, but I agree there's a possibility for very very severe inflation. Considering today's POS and eBay auction prices the yardstick, that would imply PM/food/gas prices ~3-4x higher. I'd be VERY SURPRISED at that!

Think it through: gas @ $10.50 - 16./ga would absolutely devastate the personal finances of >97% of Americans. And very severe inflation certainly won't help the low-brow collectible market, while tens of millions more Americans are immiserated, desperately hocking to eat & fill the tank. And dumping your crud on eBay will be even less rewarding with (furture) internet taxes added to the mix. Careful what you wish for!

Less dramatically and more likely, let's imagine Gold doubles ...Gold & Silver bullion (purchased at the lowest premiums) in 2011 or today will maintain better value throughout the coming inflationary storm than any Mint Sets or Beanie Babies. Sorry, Chinese collectors don't favor those.

The US coin market peaked in 2007 - I suppose it troughs in 2035. Demographics don't favor collecting junk, sorry.

I think the quote might be in reference to the low mintage not so much about the price of silver...look up 1999 silver proof sets on ebay sure the price has dropped far below the $200 mark they has been at...but still if you bought for even the prices the mint charges today...you'd still have free money....
the price of silver does matter...but mintage matters alot too...
