Morning everyone,

Finally broke my sets I didn't send off for grading out of the safe and snapped some pictures of the ugly spots on my reverse proofs. The first 2 pics with the little squiggle and the mark to the left of libertys hips are a good example of bad QC on the dies as I have 3 different coins with these exact same marks. The rest are just randomly crappy with alot of odd breaks in the frosting... Nice job on QC mint!

Hey JJK so you are still keeping your coins? Or are you going to keep it and get slabs also? My sets won't be here til OCT, I ordered on the last 15 mins of the end date, it's my first order with the mint and as a collector. I already feel disappointed seeing your results.

 

Depends on your goal. If you want a graded 70, buy it that way. If you want eye appeal, take delivery of your order from the mint and look closely within the return time period.

Funny how the NGC 69 ER set is cheaper than OGP on their site.

 

I'm currently backordered with a ship date of 10/31 at the mint. Would it be prudent to wait or pull the trigger on one of these 69 sets at $189? I'm worried about getting a bad set (or someone's return) or I could get some kind of die variety (wishful thinking). If you say go with Silvertowne, which tpg and which label would you project the higher value later?

 

I would take my chances on raw before 69s, if I were you.

 

Did you order from the mint? Any issues with your set(s)? I'm only getting one set and the fear of getting a bad set is tempting me to just pay the extra $35 to get a PCGS FS 69 set from Silvertowne. But then again, maybe these 69 sets from Silvertowne are priced as such because they themselves are low for the grade or were returned. Decisions, decisions....

 

I ordered from the mint, then cancelled when 70 sets became available from vendors. Why not see what you get...worst case is you can eat the return postage if you don't like it and don't want to resell it...for a profit, probably. Based on what I've seen with 70s, 69s might not be very appealing in hand, in this set. With ATB pucks, my 69s look perfect. With this set, 70s do not look perfect.

 

Thanks for your quick input. I will wait and hope that the Mint's QC improves on this final batch of coins. I was trying to rationalize the extra $40 by including grading fees and free shipping. But, then I reminded myself that I don't collect slabbed coins unless it's for authenticity's sake. And there's always a good feeling knowing you got yours directly from the Mint, sort of like getting in on the ground floor on something. At least that's how I felt when I got my 25th anniversary set last year. Again, thanks!

 

I'm still waiting for mine too. 9/28 is when mine should be ready to ship. I might buy a graded set soon though.

 

If the rim of the coin is not perfect, but the obverse and reverse looks good, would NGC award the coin with PF70 grade still?

 

I cannot bring myself to get excited over a silver round and then pay the amount the mint is asking.
Makeing it worse not knowing what condiction they will be when i get them in hand,
You would think that coming from the mint these coins would all grade the highest grade you could get on them.
Factor the asking price into that and it would seem those that pay the high cost would demand the grade.
This is the mint each coin should be perfect in its grade and there should not be any excuse for it not to be.
Each of us look for the best coin when we buy raw and to get it from where its made we should demand the best.

 

2013s american eagle 2 coin set coming next year? i think it will and mint should continue this series. a nice collectible set. but should limit it to around 200,000 set each year.

 

Probably not, they'll commemorate something else using the ASE.

It won't be considered a series until there are consecutive years it is produced, which likely won't happen since you can't continue to commemorate the 75th anniversary of something on the 76th year or 77th..

It is a nice set, but next year they'll create a consumer frenzy with something else to commemorate most likely and it will be limited, maybe 100k or perhaps 300k, we won't know until next year.

 

How about the 100th Aniversary of the Buffalo Nickel from the San Francisco Mint ?

 

Commemorating a nickel would be better if they actually made them as nickels, not silver dollars. :thumb:
