Today I am taking Preston to a coin shop to look for some coin holders. And maybe to drool over the coins we cannot possibly afford lol Anything I should know about coin dealers? If they are anything like car salesmen or realtors I'm prepared lol
All coin dealers are different, I know one who talks a ton and one that talks so little that it seems as he is almost not human
Seems like a lot of them come alive around kids who show an interest in coins, so hopefully he's that kind of dealer. Guy
Well, if you read some of the past threads on CT regarding coin dealers, you'll find good and bad. You just never know until you go. When my grandmother first took me many years ago, the owner was as nice as could be. I think he realized granny was a pushover and easily gave in to the whims of her spoiled grandchild (me).
I think it went well. It was my first time being in a coin shop. When I called I spoke to an older man who of course told me we should invest in silver. I see where he's coming from (and where it could benefit him) but I think we will stick to what we originally planned. We scored 12 "undated" buffalo nickels that I can either read the dates on or the obverse and reverse don't line up. There's probably a term for that but I haven't learned it yet feel free to correct me. It was fun to look at their binders of coins. I did manage to sneak a pretty nice 1943 penny under his radar to save back for his birthday. He was fascinated by the foreign currency. They had a mixed bin marked 10/$2 so I let him sift through it and pick out 10. He was in heaven I told him he should make some more of his Perler melty bead creations to sell and then he could better fund his collection.
Yay! That's what I was hoping for. That he'd get to see the selection and maybe come across an idea of what he'd like to invest in and like you said save up for that coin or set that caught his eye in the shop.
Undated buffalos are always fun, and with a product called Nic-a-date, you and him can sit down and he can "magically" bring the date back on the coins. http://www.cointalk.com/t28021/ http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/product/nic-a-date.html I believe there is also something homemade that use can use on them as well, I've never done it though.
Take Preston to a local coin show. Whenever I have taken my son (10 years old), he gets all sorts of freebies from some of the dealers. TC
We are trying to locate one that is closer than a 3 hour drive. Is there a website that would have a list by chance?
If they are silver or gold (and shaped like a coin) I think they would sell well here. I know I am interested in one and would be willing in paying with coins...
