Weird situation opening a safety deposit box

If I was ever asked what I was going to keep in it I would have no problem saying to them... "Don't worry about it."
I end up saying that to a lot of nosy people.

I would also have no problem asking for some privacy if they would not leave the vault.

You should have asked if it's a option to pay for 20 years in advance for the box incase you end up going to the state pen, ha ha...

Absolutely go elsewhere. I'd suggest even finding a "local" bank, some of them still exist. I've had all sorts of problems with the larger banks, but get good service from my credit unions and the local county bank by me, which is why I'm moving everything into the CU's and the local one. The smaller banks have to try to differentiate themselves somehow to get the business instead of the big guys, and usually in my experience they give better customer service as that differentiation point.

I agree with posts here saying what the banker did was not right. Personally, (and I am this big of a jerk), I would go to the branch manager and ask WHY exactly did this banker violate my privacy in this way, and WHAT is the bank's policy concerning such things, and WHAT is the branch manager going to do about it.

Then I would let the manager know you are upset enough about it to consider moving your business of many years elsewhere.

If you don't raise a stink about it, then the person who did this to you will do it to others, others who may not know any better.

 

I have deposited with over 20 different banks in Calif, chasing high CD rates over many decades. I've actually made long term friendships with some bank mgrs. Rabobank is absolutely the worst bank I have ever dealt with. The one Rabobank mgr I dealt with (not to far from you) was crazier than a outhouse rat.

 

I think I would be traipsing my bum out the door and not taking long enough to let the door whack me bum. I do buswax with lots of banks and I have never run into your CIA type fool.

 

I have accounts in many many institutional saving facilities and find the Credit Unions are indeed much more friendly, accommodating. Recently while some of my bank's started cutting of my coin supplies ie rolled, boxed coins for searching - I find my Credit Unions are just pleased as punch to have me come in and buy up all their excess rolled and bagged coins - I make a deal that I don't bring back any but the proceeds after I cash them out in one of those other savings facilities. I even have them calling me when goodies come in.

In essence, Credit Unions ROCK! You are the owner/shareholder/account so they report to you and not Wall St. They only cost me in having to buy up boxes of candy for the tellers when they save numismatic treasures.

If more people dumped their commercial Wall St. banks and went through their credit unions they would see a big difference.

I came here to post this! I just opened one a couple days back and the only information I needed to provide was my name, address, contact info, account number, and other related info... nothing about what was going in it, and she got the box out for me, walked it into the privacy room, made me go in there and closed the door behind me. They insist on not even seeing anything in there. Sp apparently, whenever I go back, if I just have a couple small things to toss in there, they are gonna make me take it to the privacy room, lol.

Given some of the apparent security issues with WF SDB's (Google it, Wells Fargo Safe Deposit Box Theft), I'd demand a refund and clean the box out ASAP.

You will generally do better with a Credit Union anyhow. Same box: CU = $33, Bank = $55, in Columbus, Ohio. Credit Unions are the red-haired stepchild of the financial system; I find them invariably more polite, cordial, and accommodating.

As for the SDB, I would have told him some unkindly words and walked outta the bank.

Easier to get a small safe and mount it to the wall in the attic or basement... and you can stack as you wish

 

I recently opened a SDB that only has one key and uses palm prints to access the boxes. No bank employees needed to access your box.
